The Merseyside derby has been played 248 times in competitive football since Everton beat Liverpool 3-0 at Goodison Park on 13 October 1894. The next two derbies are in the 2026-27 Premier League: at Hill Dickinson Stadium on 29 November 2026 and at Anfield on 30 January 2027.

Records in the Merseyside derby

Liverpool’s 6-0 at Anfield in September 1935 is the biggest win in the fixture. The highest-scoring derby was Liverpool’s 7-4 win at Anfield in February 1933, and the 4-4 FA Cup replay at Goodison in February 1991 is the highest-scoring draw.

Ian Rush is the derby’s all-time top scorer with 25 goals for Liverpool. Dixie Dean has the most for Everton, 19, of which 18 came in the league. Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall made the most derby appearances, 41.

Crossing the park

Liverpool did not buy directly from Everton between 1959 and 2000. The most recent direct transfer was Abel Xavier’s from Everton to Liverpool in 2002, the only player to appear for both sides in derbies in the same season. Nick Barmby’s move in 2000, for £6 million, is the most Liverpool have paid Everton. In the other direction, Peter Beardsley (1991) and Gary Ablett (1992) were the last players to go straight from Liverpool to Everton.
