Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, having scored 41 Bundesliga goals in 2020-21 to break Gerd Müller’s single-season record of 40. He opened his La Liga account with two goals in a 4-1 win at Real Sociedad on 21 August 2022 and finished four goals clear of Benzema.
Benzema’s 19 came from only 24 appearances. Joselu’s 16 could not keep Espanyol up: they were relegated along with Valladolid and Elche. Antoine Griezmann, joint fourth with 15 goals, also had the most assists in the league, 16.
