Sunil Chhetri scored 95 goals in 157 appearances for India. He scored on his senior debut — against Pakistan in Quetta on 12 June 2005, an equaliser that salvaged a 1-1 draw — and played his last international in October 2025, finishing as both India’s all-time leading scorer and the country’s most-capped player.
The number stopped moving in 2025, so unlike most record pages this one has a final answer rather than a running total. What follows is that career broken down four ways — by year, by competition, by opponent and by confederation — with the totals checked against each other.

2011 was his heaviest year in both columns — 18 caps and 13 goals, seven of them at the SAFF Championship that December. 2018 is the concentrated one: he scored eight times in six matches, and every one of those eight goals came in a single tournament, the Intercontinental Cup in Mumbai. 2020 is blank — the pandemic wiped India’s international programme from the calendar that year.
Two published reference tables split one appearance differently between 2008 and 2011, which is why you will occasionally see 13 and 17 in those rows instead of 12 and 18. The figures above are the set that matches his cap numbering: his 2008 matches run from cap 14 to cap 25, and his 2011 matches from cap 38 to cap 55. Either way the career total is 157.
The two retirements that fixed the number at 95
Chhetri retired twice, and the gap between the two is the reason his final tally is often quoted wrongly.
The first ending was announced in May 2024 and played out on 6 June 2024, a goalless draw with Kuwait at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. He walked off that night on 94 goals from 151 caps, and for nine months that was the record.
It did not hold. In March 2025, at 40, he was recalled by India head coach Manolo Marquez for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign. He scored on his comeback — a 3-0 friendly win over the Maldives in Shillong on 19 March 2025, his 152nd cap and his 95th goal. That turned out to be the last one. India lost 2-1 to Singapore in Goa on 14 October 2025 and missed the tournament, and he confirmed the end of his India career the following month.
So the arithmetic is 151 caps and 94 goals at the first retirement, plus six appearances and one goal after the comeback: 157 and 95.

The SAFF Championship is comfortably his biggest single source at 23 goals, which is no surprise for a tournament India have dominated — 13 finals in 14 editions. The Intercontinental Cup is the striking row: 13 goals from 11 matches, the only competition on the list where he averaged more than a goal a game, and eight of those 13 came in the 2018 edition alone.
How many came in competitive matches
This is the split most lists leave out, and it is worth having because it is the usual objection to the total. Of the 157 caps, 89 were competitive matches and 68 were friendlies. The goals divide 52 to 43.
You can check that against the competition table above: four of the entries there — the Intercontinental Cup, the Nehru Cup, the King’s Cup and the Merdeka Tournament — are invitational friendly tournaments rather than qualifying or finals football. Add their 24 goals to the 19 in ordinary friendlies and you get the 43.
Set against that, 52 competitive international goals is still comfortably an Indian record, and it includes the goals that took India to the AFC Asian Cup.

Two teams sit level at the top on nine goals each, but they got there very differently: the Maldives conceded nine in eight meetings, Nepal nine in thirteen. Cambodia is the shortest entry and the steepest rate — five goals in three matches, spread across the 2007 Nehru Cup, a friendly and 2023 Asian Cup qualifying.

The 2008 one carried the most weight. It came in the AFC Challenge Cup final, Bhaichung Bhutia scored the other goal, and the win put India into the 2011 AFC Asian Cup — their first appearance at the tournament since 1984. The 2023 hat-trick against Pakistan included two penalties and came 18 years to the week after his debut.
Fifty different national teams
Across those 157 caps Chhetri played against 50 different countries. Broken down by confederation, 145 of the appearances and 86 of the goals came against Asian opposition, which is what a career built on SAFF and AFC football looks like.
The odd line is Africa: four matches, five goals, his best return per game against any confederation. The four appearances each against CONCACAF and Oceania sides produced two goals apiece.
Where 95 goals ranks in the world
Chhetri finished fourth on the all-time list of international goalscorers, behind Cristiano Ronaldo on 146, Lionel Messi on 125 and Iran’s Ali Daei on 108. He and Daei are the two Asian players in the top four.
His rate stands up better than the raw total suggests. 95 goals in 157 matches is 0.61 a game — fractionally ahead of Messi’s 0.60. His own high-water mark in the global rankings came in June 2021, when a run of World Cup qualifying goals took him past Messi on the list of active international scorers.

Did Sunil Chhetri come out of retirement?
Yes. He retired after the Kuwait match in June 2024 on 94 goals, then returned in March 2025 for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and scored once more, against the Maldives. He played six further internationals and ended his India career in November 2025.
