On October 3, Team Apex Gaming got into the BGMI Showdown semi-finals in eighth place, one point clear of Vijay Esports. On Thursday, the first day of the semi-finals in Hyderabad, they finished top of the table by 23 points.
Apex played all six of Group B’s matches and scored 66 points: 40 finishes, 26 placement points and one chicken dinner, which came in the last game of the day on Miramar. Team Outrage are second on 43 and Vasista Esports third on 41.
How the semi-finals work
The 24 semi-finalists are split into three groups of eight and play 24 matches over four days, October 8 to 11, with each team in 16 of them. Group B were in all six lobbies on day one. Groups A and C played three each, so two-thirds of the field has played half as many games as the leaders.
The top eight after 16 matches go straight to the Grand Finals, a LAN in Hyderabad from October 16 to 18. The other 16 drop into the Last Chance stage on October 12 and 13, where four more places are on offer.
Six games, six different winners
Learn From Past won the opening match on Rondo with 22 points, knocking out GodLike and Apex on the way. It was their first chicken dinner since the Upper Bracket Survival began. They went through all 18 games of that stage without one.
Vasista took match two on Erangel, and Welt Esports won match three on the same map after a 3v4 clutch against Genesis. Group C came in for the second half of the day. Outrage beat Apex in the final fight of match four, Wyld Fangs won match five on Miramar with 21 points, and Apex closed the day with a chicken dinner of their own in match six.
The champions are 23rd
Orangutan, the defending champions, have nine points from three matches, and only Elite Nova Esports, on five, are below them. Soul are 20th on 14, and GodLike tenth on 24.
Three games is not much to judge anyone on, and Group A play six in a row on Friday. Nebula Esports, who won the Upper Bracket Survival with 178 points, made 33 from their three games on Thursday. At that rate they would be level with Apex after six.
The cut line
Learn From Past hold the last direct place for now, eighth on 29. Welt are two points behind them on 27, with three games fewer played. Hyper-Catz, who came through the Lower Bracket to get here, are 16th on 18.
