Team 8Bit had 24 points and no chicken dinners after four matches of the BGMI Showdown Grand Finals on Friday. Two games on Miramar later they were top of the table on 63, three points clear of Blitz Epigrotive Gaming, having won both.
The first of three days in Hyderabad ran to six matches: one on Rondo, three on Erangel and two on Miramar. Five different teams won a game. 8Bit were the only side to win two, taking match 5 with 15 points and match 6 with 24.
How the lead changed hands
K9 Esports opened the finals with a 25-point chicken dinner on Rondo. Welt Esports won the first Erangel game with 17 points, and Blitz took the next with 26, the biggest single-match haul of the day. Team Apex Gaming, who topped the semi-finals, won match 4.
After those four games K9 and Blitz were level on 52 points, with Welt a long way back on 36 and 8Bit not yet in the conversation. Then the map changed. K9 added five points across the two Miramar games and Blitz eight. 8Bit took 39.
K9 finish the day third on 57, with Welt fourth on 55. Myth Official were fifth on 49, Version1 x Blue Army sixth on 43 and Team Outrage seventh on 42. Apex, despite their win, are eighth on 36.
A bad start for two semi-final favourites
Two of the best sides from the semi-finals had a miserable Friday. Nebula Esports finished second in the semi-finals and GodLike Esports led that table for part of the stage. Both have 20 points after day one, which leaves them 43 behind 8Bit with 12 matches left. Revenant XSpark are last on 14.
Only one team leaves Hyderabad with the PUBG Mobile Global Championship spot, but the top six all qualify for the BGMI International Cup. Sixth place currently sits on 43 points, so the teams below it are not out of that race yet. Team Soul and Wyld Fangs have 34 each.
Why Saturday matters more than usual
Day two is another straight points race over six matches. What makes it matter is the rule that takes over on Sunday. After match 12, the organisers take the leader’s total and add 10 points. Any team that reaches that figure becomes match-point eligible, and the first eligible team to win a match takes the title. If nobody manages it in the final six games, the team with the most points after match 18 is champion.
So whoever leads on Saturday night sets the target, and everyone else needs to be within reach of it. 8Bit came through the qualifiers’ Group A rather than the semi-finals, and on Friday’s evidence they are comfortable on Miramar. The top four are separated by eight points, though, and one more good map for Blitz or K9 changes the picture.
All three days stream on the Krafton India Esports YouTube channel. The Grand Finals end on Sunday, 18 October.
