Yashbardhan Chauhan made 122 from 100 balls, and Australia’s Under-19s gave away 21 wides
India’s Under-19s cannot lose the Youth ODI series now. Chauhan’s century did most of it, and Australia’s bowlers did some of the rest for them.

Australia’s Under-19s found two ways to lose the second Youth ODI at Rajkot on Monday. First they bowled 21 wides while Yashbardhan Chauhan helped himself to a hundred. Then, chasing 343, they reached 171 for 4 in the 27th over and lost their last six wickets for 67.
India won by 103 runs. At 2-0 in a three-match series they cannot lose it now, and the last one is on Wednesday at the same ground.
Chauhan again, and this time for 122
Chauhan was the player of the match in the opener for a 54 off 34 balls and two wickets. He went a good deal further here. He walked in at 101 for 2 in the 19th over and was still batting in the 49th, and his 122 came off 100 balls with 15 fours and two sixes. A hundred built along the ground rather than over the rope, and the reason India reached a total Australia never looked like chasing.
He had company. VK Vineeth was at the other end for a third-wicket stand of 132, and Vineeth played the opposite innings: 87 from 92 with four fours and six sixes. That partnership ended in the 40th over with India on 233. Kushagra Ojha then hit 34 from 20 balls to lift the rate again, and Chauhan fell in the 49th with the total on 334.
At the top, Aaryavir Sehwag made 47 from 48 with nine fours before he was run out in the 19th over, and captain Lakshya Raichandani went for 11. India closed on 341 for 7. There were 27 extras in that, 21 of them wides. Thomas Vaseo took 3 for 78 and Patrick Sullivan 2 for 55, and not one of the six Australian bowlers went at less than five and a half an over.
The chase was on, and then it was not
Australia lost Neel Patel lbw in the second over and Hayden Barbulovic in the fifth, which left them 29 for 2 and needing something out of the ordinary. Matthew Lough and Jack Czosnek supplied it for a while. Lough made 42 from 40 with ten fours. Czosnek, the captain, took 81 off 63 with seven fours and four sixes.
At 171 for 4 in the 27th over the required rate was climbing but the game was alive. Blake Cattle made 44, Zed Hollick 33, and then the innings simply stopped. Australia were bowled out for 238 in the 42nd over, which is the last six wickets down for 67 runs with nearly nine overs left unused.
Chigurupati Venkata finished with 3 for 64. The tightest spell belonged to Mohit Ulva, whose seven overs cost 19 runs and included two maidens, and Kavya Paresh Patel took 2 for 23 from his seven. Chauhan added two wickets to the hundred. India used seven bowlers and six of them took at least one.
Where the series stands
Friday’s opener was nothing like this. Scheduled for 50 overs, it was played over 20 a side, India made 182 for 6 and Australia finished on 175 for 7. Czosnek’s 55 from 27 nearly took it away from India: he was out at 171 with 12 needed off seven balls, and India held on by seven runs.
Anvay Dravid, who made 38 from 18 that night, managed nine on Monday. Sehwag has gone 28 and 47. Two debutants whose surnames guarantee an audience, and between them so far one big innings apiece. The third Youth ODI is on Wednesday at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, and then the tour goes long-form: a Youth Test at the same venue from 27 September, a second in Ahmedabad from 5 October. Australia have two days to work out how to bowl at Chauhan, and how to stop handing over free runs before they get to him.
