The Rockets’ women are in the Lord’s final, and their men are waiting on Old Trafford
Tristan Stubbs finished unbeaten on 52 to knock Trent Rockets off the top of the men’s Hundred. Six hours earlier their women’s side had survived 10 for 3 and booked the final.

Trent Rockets went into Monday needing two wins at Trent Bridge to finish top of both Hundred competitions and skip the eliminator. They got one of them, and it was the one that arrived from 10 for 3.
Stubbs picked the chase up and carried it
Chris Jordan put the Rockets in and Southern Brave chased 159 down with three balls left, which is a strange way to spend an evening for a side that was already out of the knockouts before the game started. Tristan Stubbs finished on 52 not out from 28 balls with four fours and three sixes, and brought up his fifty with a six. He walked in at 42 for 1 and never looked hurried.
The partnership that settled it was worth 70 from 41 balls with Marcus Stoinis, who made 46 from 25 and did most of the scoring in that stretch. Stoinis was caught off Ben Sanderson with 11 needed from seven balls, which was late enough to be interesting and early enough not to matter. Jamie Smith had given the chase its start with 26 from 18 before falling to a relay catch off Craig Overton, Calvin Harrison completing it after Finn Allen kept the ball alive on the rope.
Harrison was the only Rockets bowler to take two wickets, and he went for 32 from his ten balls doing it. Overton was the pick with 1 for 18 from 20. Nobody else got close to containing Stubbs.
92 for 5, and why 158 was never enough
Ben Duckett, Finn Allen and Aneurin Donald all got in and all got out, which left the Rockets 92 for 5 after 61 balls with Sam Billings and Tim David back in the pavilion. Adil Rashid, Daniel Worrall, Jordan, Stoinis and Nikhil Chaudhary took a wicket each, and none of them conceded more than 29 in a spell.
Mitchell Santner and Lewis Gregory rescued it. Their unbroken stand of 66 came off 39 balls, Santner ending on 35 from 23 and Gregory on 28 from 18, and the last 30 balls of the innings produced 56. On a night when Stubbs and Stoinis scored at nearly two runs a ball between them, 158 was never going to be enough.
10 for 3, and the Rockets’ women went to Lord’s anyway
The women’s game had already been the better contest. Southern Brave made 117 for 5 through their top order, Maia Bouchier top-scoring with 38, Lizelle Lee making 31 and Laura Wolvaardt 24, on a surface nobody could get away on. Four balls into the chase it looked like plenty.
Trent Rockets were 10 for 3 in the powerplay. That is the lowest powerplay score in the history of the competition, which is a record no team leading the table wants attached to them. Ash Gardner made 37 to keep the thing alive, and when Nat Sciver-Brunt walked out at number seven, the score was 66 for 5 with 31 balls left.
She made 32 from 19 and the Rockets got home with two balls to spare, their seventh win in a row. Sciver-Brunt said afterwards that the pitch “was a bit slow, and they bowled pretty well in the first half”, and explained her position in the order as part tactical and part injury management. Batting at seven with 31 balls remaining is not a plan anyone draws up in advance.
That result puts the Rockets women on 28 points from eight and straight into the final at Lord’s on 16 August. Southern Brave, second on 20, go to the eliminator at the Kia Oval on Friday and find out on Tuesday night who they are playing.
Everything now runs through Old Trafford
Both competitions have their last group business at Old Trafford on Tuesday, and both matches are about the Rockets. In the men’s, Trent Rockets are on 24 points from eight games and cannot add to that. Sunrisers Leeds are on 20 from seven with a net run rate of 1.094 to the Rockets’ 0.740. Beat Manchester Super Giants and Sunrisers finish level on points and top on the tie-break, which sends the Rockets to the Kia Oval on Friday instead of straight to Lord’s. If Super Giants win, the Rockets are through to the final without playing again.
Manchester Super Giants, MI London and Welsh Fire are all on 16 points with a game each still to come, so second and third are unresolved in the men’s competition too. For Indian viewers the women’s game at Old Trafford starts at 7.30pm IST and the men’s at 11pm.
Southern Brave, for what it is worth, finish their men’s campaign with three wins from eight and a win over the table-toppers in their pocket. Their women’s side is still in it. Jemimah Rodrigues, ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a hamstring injury, will be watching the eliminator from the sidelines.
