Tanmay Baloda came in as a replacement, and his 14 for 73 has broken Tim Southee’s Youth Test record
The Haryana left-arm spinner took 8 for 41 on the third day in Ahmedabad as India’s Under-19s beat Australia by 10 wickets and swept the four-day series 2-0.

Tanmay Baloda was added to India’s Under-19 squad as a replacement in September. He now holds a record Tim Southee had kept since 2007. The Haryana left-arm spinner took 8 for 41 in Australia’s second innings in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, finished the second Youth Test with 14 for 73, and India won by 10 wickets inside three days.
No bowler had taken 14 wickets in a Youth Test before. Southee’s 12 for 92 for New Zealand against India in Dunedin in January 2007 had been the best match figures in the format.
Four on Tuesday, four on Wednesday
Baloda’s 6 for 32 on the first day had Australia all out for 174. India then built a lead of 141, making 315 on Tuesday. Wicketkeeper Abhipray Biswas top-scored with 73 and captain Yashbardhan Chauhan made 52. Leg-spinner Spencer Green kept Australia in it with 7 for 110.
Australia batted again before the close and finished the second day on 86 for 4, still 55 behind. Baloda had all four.
He took four more on Wednesday. Priyanshu Singh, the right-arm medium pacer, removed Jacob Pietz and Thomas Vaseo for figures of 2 for 25, and Baloda had the rest. Australia lost their last six wickets for 65 and were bowled out for 151.
Blake Cattle was the one batter who stayed with him for long. He had made 102 and 123 in the first Youth Test in Rajkot, and here he hit 63 from 104 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, before Baloda got him too.
Five balls to finish
India needed 11. Lakshya Raichandani hit Green for two fours, and the chase took five balls.
The win completes a 2-0 sweep of the two four-day games, after India won in Rajkot by an innings and 48 runs. They had already taken the one-day series 3-0.
How he got here
Baloda was not part of the original plan. He and Saurashtra’s Aryan Savsani were brought in after Bengal leg-spinner Rohit Yadav was suspended by the BCCI for two years over a 27-month age discrepancy. Savsani took Rohit’s place in the one-day squad and Baloda took it in the four-day squad.
When the change was announced, Baloda was described as a batting all-rounder. He has now bowled India to a series win with figures no Under-19 Test bowler has managed.
