Tanmay Baloda was not in India’s original Under-19 squad for this series. On Monday the Haryana left-arm spinner bowled 25 overs, 11 of them maidens, and took 6 for 32 as Australia’s Under-19s were bowled out for 174 on the first day of the second Youth Test in Ahmedabad.
India chose to bowl at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground and reached stumps on 38 for 2, 136 behind. They lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning in Rajkot by an innings.
Six down for 65
The damage was done in the first 21 overs. Priyanshu Singh had captain Matthew Lough caught by Aryan Yadav in the second over, and Mohit Ulva removed Hayden Barbulovic with the score on 28.
Baloda’s first wicket came in the 17th over. Eli Brain had lasted 31 balls for four before Baloda trapped him lbw, and Neel Patel, who had made 31, was stumped by Abhipray Biswas two overs later. Aayan Akram got Blake Cattle for eight, a quiet day for the batter who made 102 and 123 in Rajkot, and Baloda had Zed Hollick caught behind. Australia had lost four wickets for 15 runs and were 65 for 6.
Henderson and Pietz dig in
The next 40 overs went at a crawl. Wicketkeeper Charlie Henderson and Jacob Pietz added 70 for the seventh wicket, with Henderson’s 37 taking 147 balls and Pietz’s 26 coming from 107. Baloda broke the stand by bowling Pietz, and Akram had Henderson caught by Manal Chauhan three overs later.
The tail added another 35. Baloda caught and bowled Thomas Vaseo and finished the innings by having Patrick Sullivan stumped for 20, the last ball of the 73rd over. Biswas ended the innings with three catches and two stumpings behind the stumps.
Raichandani goes cheaply
Lakshya Raichandani made 240 in the first Youth Test. Here he scratched around for 22 balls, scored one, and was caught by Henderson off Vaseo with India on eight. Sagar Virk hit three fours in his 16 before Spencer Green had him lbw.
Kushagra Ojha (13) and Yashbardhan Chauhan (7) saw India to the close. Vaseo bowled five overs for eight runs and the wicket, and the Australians kept the scoring rate down to 2.53 an over. India resume on Tuesday needing 137 more for a first-innings lead, with eight wickets in hand.
