Andhra needed 398 to win at Mulapadu, and by the time they were done they had lost all ten wickets in 30.5 overs. Tanay Thyagarajan took six of them for 35 with his left-arm spin, Hyderabad won by 267 runs on Wednesday, and they lead Elite Group B with two wins from two.
Thyagarajan had already taken 5 for 63 in the first innings and made 53 not out in between. That is 11 wickets in the match and 20 in two games this season, nine of them against Tripura in the opening round. Nobody in this season’s Ranji Trophy has more.
How Hyderabad got their lead
Mohammed Siraj’s side batted first and made 275. Abhirath Reddy scored 67 and put on 109 for the first wicket with Tanmay Agarwal (42). Hyderabad then slipped from 109 without loss to 141 for 4, and it was Rahul Radesh’s 58 not out that got them to a decent total. Tripurana Vijay took 4 for 90 for Andhra.
Andhra’s reply was built around Shaik Rasheed’s 61. Once Thyagarajan had him lbw at 112 for 4, the last six wickets added 72. Thyagarajan took five in all, Ricky Bhui and Kavuri Saiteja were run out, and Andhra were all out for 184, 91 behind.
Himateja’s hundred
The second innings nearly let Andhra back in. Kavuri Saiteja took four wickets and Hyderabad were 101 for 5, a lead of only 192. Kodimela Himateja turned that around. He made 123 not out off 202 balls with five sixes, first with Ruthik Mende, who blocked his way to 31 off 113 balls in a stand of 99, and then with Thyagarajan, whose 53 not out came off 64. Siraj declared on 306 for 7.
Wednesday’s collapse
Aniketh Reddy struck twice in the first two overs of the chase on the third evening, and Andhra started the last day on 7 for 2. Ricky Bhui, their captain, and M Hemanth Reddy took them to 55 before Thyagarajan had Bhui caught. After that it was quick: seven wickets went for 75, and five of them were Thyagarajan’s. He had Seeram Rahul caught, trapped Hemanth Reddy lbw, bowled Revanth Reddy and Saurabh Kumar, and had KV Sasikanth stumped. Aniketh finished with 3 for 57.
Punjab come to Secunderabad
Hyderabad have 13 points, four clear of Punjab, who beat Chhattisgarh on the same afternoon. The top two in the group meet in Secunderabad from 26 October.
