Sunrisers knock the Super Giants women out, and Seifert answers with 80 off 40

Old Trafford put on both halves of the same fixture on Tuesday, and the two clubs took one each. Sunrisers Leeds’ women won by 41 runs and knocked Manchester Super Giants out of the competition. Their men were bowled out for 127 in the evening game and lost by ten wickets with 33 balls unused.

Sutherland did most of it herself

Annabel Sutherland finished 62 not out from 36 balls, took 2 for 17 and held two catches. She was player of the match by a distance, and the last two balls she faced went for six apiece. She had reached her fifty from 34 balls with a single six in it.

Phoebe Litchfield had given Sunrisers the start, 27 from 12 with five fours and a six before Mady Villiers had her caught at 34. Lauren Winfield-Hill was run out for 20. Sunrisers were 83 for 3 with 58 balls gone, which is not a position that usually ends at 166.

Sutherland and Dani Gibson added 36 from 20 balls, then Sutherland and Jess Jonassen took the last 22 balls for 47. Kathryn Bryce was the only Super Giants bowler to keep the rate under a run a ball, and she went for 14 from her 20.

Mandhana went early, and the chase never recovered

Smriti Mandhana made 28 from 17 and was bowled by Jonassen with the score on 42. Grace Scrivens hung around for 31 from 24 before Sutherland had her stumped, and Richa Ghosh made 13 from 14 in a phase where Super Giants needed someone to hit through the middle.

Meg Lanning was bowled for 10 from 15. Bryce was retired out on 15 from 14 with the score 98 for 4 and 25 balls left, a decision that says everything about how far behind the rate the innings had drifted. They finished on 125 for 8.

Jonassen took 3 for 21, Sutherland 2 for 17, Deepti Sharma 2 for 21 from her 15 balls. Sunrisers, who are defending the title they won last year, move into Friday’s eliminator at The Oval against Southern Brave, both sides on 20 points from eight games. Trent Rockets, on 28, are waiting at Lord’s on Sunday. Super Giants finish fourth on 18 with nothing left to play.

Seifert hit seven sixes and the chase lasted 67 balls

The men’s game was over almost as soon as it started. Jos Buttler put Sunrisers in, Gus Atkinson took 3 for 30, and no batter reached 35. Mitchell Marsh made 32 from 23 and Zak Crawley 31 from 28, but Sunrisers lost their last five wickets for 16 runs and were all out for 127 off the final ball of the innings. Sonny Baker took 2 for 22, and the innings ended with a slow over-rate penalty forcing an extra fielder inside the circle.

Tim Seifert then made 80 not out from 40 balls with seven sixes, his third fifty in three innings. He brought up this one from 25 balls. Paul Walter, who had taken a wicket earlier in the evening, finished 44 not out from 28. Their opening stand reached 100 from 55 balls, and the target went down inside 67. Brydon Carse conceded 48 from his 17 balls.

Three teams can still take the second eliminator spot

Trent Rockets sealed top spot and a straight passage to Sunday’s final at Lord’s. Below them the table is tight. Super Giants sit second on 20 points with a net run rate of 0.791, Sunrisers third on 20 at 0.603, and both have finished their eight group games.

MI London and Welsh Fire are on 16 with one to play. MI London face Birmingham Phoenix in Birmingham at 11pm IST on Wednesday, Welsh Fire host London Spirit in Cardiff at 7.30pm. Either can reach 20, though Welsh Fire’s net run rate of minus 1.001 makes the arithmetic ugly for them. MI London are on 0.262. Whoever survives goes to The Oval on Friday.
