Sri Lanka have not beaten England in a T20I since 2014, and Aneurin Donald debuts at 29 tonight
England begin a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in Southampton, with a 29-year-old Blast six-hitter opening alongside Jos Buttler and a twelve-match losing run on the line.

Sri Lanka have not beaten England in a T20 international since 20 May 2014. That is twelve defeats in a row, one of them at this year’s T20 World Cup, and the run gets another test tonight at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, where the three-match series starts at 11pm IST.
England are the best T20 side in the world right now
They earned that. England beat India 4-0 in a five-match home series in July, and the way they did it was the point rather than the margin. Harry Brook made 229 runs in four innings at an average of 114.50 and a strike rate of 214.02 and took the player-of-the-series award. In the last game, at this same ground in Southampton on 11 July, Jos Buttler made 131 and Brook 95 not out, and the pair put on 233 in 103 balls, a record second-wicket stand for England.
That series took England to the top of the ICC T20I rankings ahead of India, who had just won the World Cup. Any Indian fan who watched that fortnight will not need reminding what this England batting line-up does to a decent attack when the ball is coming on.
Aneurin Donald finally gets a cap at 29
Phil Salt has a quad problem and misses the series, and the man replacing him at the top of the order is one of the more overdue selections England have made. Aneurin Donald opens with Buttler tonight, on debut, aged 29. He is the oldest batter to play a first T20I for England since Dawid Malan in 2017.
The case for him is not subtle. Donald scored 489 runs in this year’s Vitality Blast at a strike rate of 214 and hit 37 sixes, more than anyone else in the tournament. He went at better than a run a ball in every one of his five Hundred innings. Across 112 T20s he has 2,454 runs at 24.05 with 18 fifties. The Welshman has been doing this in county cricket for years while the selectors looked elsewhere, and now he walks into a top order alongside Buttler and Brook with nothing much to lose.
Sri Lanka arrive in poor shape
Charith Asalanka captains in place of Kusal Mendis, who tore his right hamstring during the Lanka Premier League in July, missed the home Tests against India, and is still rehabilitating. Pavan Rathnayake came in for him. Dilshan Madushanka replaced Binura Fernando, also injured.
The form is worse than the team sheet. Sri Lanka have lost ten of their fifteen completed T20Is in 2026. England swept them 3-0 in Sri Lanka in January and February. Then, as preparation for this series, they lost both warm-up matches against the England Lions by nine wickets. Two nine-wicket defeats to a second-string side, four days before a series opener, is not a statistic a touring team wants following it around.
What Sri Lanka actually have
Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana are still a serious pair of spinners, and the Utilita Bowl does turn once the surface flattens out and the evening gets on. Pathum Nissanka can bat properly. Kamindu Mendis is one of the more interesting cricketers going around. If Sri Lanka bowl first and Hasaranga gets through his four in the middle overs, there is a version of this game where it stays close for a while.
I do not think it will. But twelve years is a long time for a side with Sri Lanka’s pedigree to go without beating one opponent, and one of these evenings the streak has to end.
