Shivam Dube replaces injured Nitish Kumar Reddy in India’s England ODI squad

India have handed Shivam Dube a route back into their one-day side, naming the all-rounder as a straight replacement for the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy in the squad for the three-match ODI series against England. The BCCI confirmed the change on 6 July, closing off a selection question that had hung over the white-ball tour since Reddy broke down during the Afghanistan series at home.

The quadriceps trouble first flared when Reddy was bowling in the opening ODI against Afghanistan at Dharamsala. He was rested for the second game and aggravated it on his return in the third at Chennai, and a scan later showed swelling with fibre disruption in the left quad. The 23-year-old had already been ruled out of the T20I assignments in Ireland and against England, and the selectors have now accepted he will not be right for the fifty-over leg either. Rather than gamble on his fitness deep into a long English summer, they have reached for a batting all-rounder who is already on the ground.

Dube stays back after the T20Is

Dube is in England as part of the T20I squad, so the call-up does not disturb India’s travel plans. He simply stays on once the shortest format wraps up and slots into the ODI group. It is a tidy piece of housekeeping for a management that has spent this tour juggling fitness questions, Virat Kohli’s return among them.

For Dube himself, the timing matters. He has been a fixture in India’s T20I plans and was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad, yet his one-day opportunities have been thin. A run of games against England, on surfaces that can reward his heavy hitting through the middle and his back-of-a-length seam, is the kind of audition he has not had much of in the format. India tend to value a sixth bowling option who can bat with intent, and that is precisely the profile Reddy was picked to fill.

The squad and the schedule

With Dube in, India’s ODI squad reads: Shubman Gill (captain), Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar. Gill leads a side thick with senior names, and the balance still leans on the spin of Kuldeep and Axar with Bumrah spearheading the seam.

The ODIs follow the T20Is and run across a week. India open at Edgbaston on 14 July, move to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on 16 July, and close the tour at Lord’s on 19 July. It is a short series with little room to settle, which makes having a ready-made replacement already acclimatised more useful than it might look on paper.

Reddy’s absence is a blow given how neatly he fits India’s template, but a quadriceps strain is not worth rushing. He has time to recover fully before the next block of white-ball cricket, and India get to run their eyes over Dube in conditions that will ask questions of any middle-order all-rounder.
