West Indies had made 295 and 405 in the first two ODIs of this series and lost both by eight wickets. In Mullanpur on Saturday they finally got a result to go with the runs. Shai Hope made 162 not out from 143 balls, and West Indies chased 352 with ten balls to spare to win the third ODI by five wickets.
It is the highest total West Indies have ever made to win an ODI batting second. India still won the series 2-1.
Two down for four, then Rohit and Rahul
India batted first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, the ground’s first men’s ODI, and it started badly for the home captain. Shubman Gill, playing his first ODI as captain at his own ground, was caught behind off Jayden Seales for 1. Virat Kohli was bowled by Seales next ball. India were 4 for 2 in the third over.
Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad took them to 141 before Rohit fell for 92 off 85 balls, caught off Keemo Paul. On the way he passed 10,000 ODI runs as an opener, the fourth man to get there after Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chris Gayle. He did it in 202 innings, quicker than any of them. Gaikwad made 57.
KL Rahul then took over. He finished on 129 not out from 87 balls with ten fours and six sixes, and Naman Dhir’s 30 off 21 helped push India to 351 for 7. Seales took 3 for 62. India had chased in both earlier games, so this was the first time in the series they had a total to defend.
Hope bats through it
John Campbell went for 10 in the fifth over, bowled by Mohammed Siraj, and that was the last time India looked in control. Hope and Amir Jangoo added 109 for the second wicket before Jangoo was run out for 67. Sherfane Rutherford made 24 and Paul 44, and Hope kept going at the other end while wickets fell around him.
When Matthew Forde was caught off Kuldeep Yadav in the 44th over, West Indies were 290 for 5 and needed 62 from 39 balls. Hope and Gudakesh Motie got them in 29, with Motie finishing on 19 not out from 14. Hope hit 17 fours and three sixes, and was there at the end.
India’s attack had a rough night. Anshul Kamboj, on ODI debut, went for 82 in nine wicketless overs, although he had earlier hit 17 off nine balls with the bat. Kuldeep’s ten overs cost 62 for one wicket, and Siraj, Gurnoor Brar and Dhir took one each.
What the numbers say
The 352 beats the 331 for 5 West Indies made against Ireland in Dublin in May 2019 as their best winning chase in ODIs. It is also only the third time a side has chased more than 350 to beat India. South Africa got 362 at Raipur in December 2025 and Australia 359 at Mohali in 2019.
It was West Indies’ first ODI win in India since Chennai in December 2019. Across the three games they made 1,052 runs and won once, which says as much about India’s bowling as their own. The attack conceded 295, 405 and 352 in a series India won, and Gill will want that looked at before this team plays another ODI.
Five T20Is next
The tour moves to the shorter format straight away, with five T20Is starting in Lucknow on 6 October. Every match starts at 7pm IST, with Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru to follow, and the series finishes on 17 October.
