Salem Spartans vs Madurai Panthers: TNPL 2026 match 11 preview and prediction

Madurai Panthers have won both their TNPL 2026 matches, and both times they needed the last over to do it. They beat Trichy Grand Cholas by two wickets with two balls to spare on 5 August, then chased 240 against VIDA Kovai Kings on 8 August and got home with three balls unused. Four points, second place, and a net run rate of 0.270 that tells you exactly how close both nights were.

SKM Salem Spartans, who meet them in match 11 at the NPR College Ground in Dindigul at 7.30pm IST on Monday, have gone the other way. Two matches, two defeats, no points, and a net run rate of -1.632 that is the second worst in the competition.

Chaturved’s 121 changed what Madurai look like

Before 8 August, Madurai were a side that scrapped. The Trichy win came from 174 for 8 in 19.4 overs, the sort of chase decided by whoever is left at the end. Then NS Chaturved hit 121 off 47 balls against Kovai, brought up his hundred in 40, and turned a target of 240 into a formality. Fifteen fours, seven sixes. He was out with the score 169 for 2 in the 13th over and the match had already been settled.

Balchander Anirudh, the captain, closed it out with 37 not out off 19. Siddharth Mahadevan, on as the impact player, made 41 off 32 while Chaturved did the damage at the other end, and Atheeq Ur Rahman chipped in with 25 off 15. Kovai had posted 239 for 4 and lost by six wickets. That is the problem Salem have to solve on Monday: Madurai’s top order has more than one way of going quickly.

Salem keep starting well and stopping

Salem’s two defeats share a shape. Kovai set them 195 on 6 August and bowled them out for 160. Two nights later, against Trichy, they reached 77 without losing a wicket inside nine overs, R Kavin and Hari Nishaanth both scoring at better than a run a ball, and still finished on 152 for 9. That is nine wickets for 75 runs after the opening stand broke. Sanjay Yadav took 2 for 18, Antony Dhas 2 for 25, and two Salem batters were run out.

K Rajkumar’s unbeaten 67 then took Trichy home with three overs in hand. Across the eight completed matches at the NPR College Ground this season the average first-innings total is 180, and Salem have not passed 160 in either innings they have batted. Six of those eight matches have been won by the side chasing, which makes losing the toss less of an excuse than it sounds.

What decides it

Salem’s bowling has not been the issue so much as the volume of runs it has been asked to defend. S Abishiek’s side kept Trichy to 155 for 3 but only had 152 to work with, and Ajith Ram, M Poiyamozhi and Rahil Shah each took a wicket in a total that was never going to be enough. Give the same attack 180 and the night looks different.

Madurai will not mind either way. They have chased in both wins, and against Kovai they won the toss and put the other side in. If Chaturved gets going again on a ground where 240 has already been overhauled, Salem’s season could be three defeats old by Tuesday morning. The more interesting question is whether Madurai can win a match without needing the final over, because a net run rate of 0.270 after two wins will start to matter when the playoff places are decided.

Salem are not short of batters who can start an innings. They are short of one who can finish it, and until that changes the pattern of their tournament is unlikely to.
