Priyansh Arya needed one more run for a double hundred, and he never got it. Manan Hingrajia bowled him for 199 on the first day of Delhi’s second-round Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat at the Palam B Ground, with the score on 376 for 4 and seven overs left before stumps.
Delhi closed on 381 for 4, with their captain Ayush Badoni unbeaten on 115. They had won the toss and batted. Gujarat took four wickets all day, and one of those was a run-out.
A maiden hundred that kept going
This was only Arya’s third first-class match. He came into it with 131 runs from three innings and a best of 82, and most people know him for the short formats: he has an IPL hundred for Punjab Kings and a T20 strike rate above 176.
He batted like it for long stretches. His 199 had 24 fours and six sixes in it, and he kept scoring while wickets fell at the other end. Sanat Sangwan made 8 in nearly 50 balls, Yash Dhull 10, and Ayush Doseja was run out for 29. At 142 for 3 in the 36th over, Gujarat were still in the day.
Then Badoni came in. The two added 234 for the fourth wicket, and the Delhi captain’s share was the steadier one: 115 not out from 149 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. It is his fifth first-class hundred.
Harshal Patel was Gujarat’s best bowler with 2 for 66. Hingrajia bowled only seven overs, and one of them will be the one Arya remembers.
The day Delhi needed after Kalyani
Delhi lost their opening game to Bengal in Kalyani, where they were bowled out for 240 on the first day. A week later they have close to 400 on the board with six wickets still in hand. Gujarat have not batted yet, and Delhi have three days to turn this into their first win in Elite Group C.
Gill out for one, Rinku carries UP again
Shubman Gill, playing his first Ranji game of the season after missing Punjab’s opener against Assam, will captain India in the Tests and the first three ODIs in New Zealand next month. He had a short day in New Chandigarh. Ajay Mandal bowled him for 1 off five balls with Punjab on 68 for 3 against Chhattisgarh. Uday Saharan steadied it with an unbeaten 106, Prabhsimran Singh made 62, and Punjab finished on 269 for 4.
In Kanpur, Rinku Singh made his second hundred in two games. He scored 112 against Bihar in the first round, and on Sunday he was left on 118 not out from 186 balls as Uttar Pradesh were bowled out for 202 by Goa. UP were 137 for 9 when Yash Dayal fell; Rinku and the No. 11 Vansh Chaudhary put on 65 for the last wicket, Chaudhary’s share 4 off 26 balls. Goa’s Yash Kasvankar took 5 for 86, and Goa reached 43 without loss by stumps.
