Pakistan’s National Champions Cup hands four captains fixed elevens and eight days in Multan
The PCB has named four squads, four captains and a locked playing XI for each side ahead of the National Champions Cup, a seven-match 50-over block in Multan built entirely around 2027 World Cup planning.

Four teams, seven matches, one ground, eight days. The PCB announced the schedule and squads for the National Champions Cup on 27 July, and the framing was unusually blunt for a domestic tournament: this is about the 2027 ODI World Cup, and nothing else.
The format, and why it is this small
The 50-over List A competition runs from 11 to 18 August, with every match at the Multan Cricket Stadium and every match a day-nighter starting at 3pm local time. Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold play a single round robin, six games in six days, and the top two go through to the final on 18 August.
It also opens Pakistan’s 2026-27 domestic season, which makes the timing less arbitrary than it looks. Eight days, one venue, no travel.
The captaincy list is where the selection thinking shows. Shaheen Shah Afridi leads Pakistan Gold, Shadab Khan has Pakistan Greens, Saim Ayub takes Pakistan Whites and Sahibzada Farhan is in charge of Pakistan Blues. Four white-ball leaders, four squads, 44 names across the four elevens.
Fixed elevens, which is the interesting bit
The selectors have named a fixed playing XI for each side, backed by a 13-player reserve pool. Teams have to field the announced eleven throughout, and a reserve can only come in for a player who is injured or concussed. Reserves still travel, train and sit with the squad on match days.
That rule does something a normal domestic tournament cannot. Nobody gets dropped after one bad game, which means every batter and bowler in those four elevens has three innings of guaranteed opportunity in a role the selectors have already assigned them. If you want to know whether Khushdil Shah can finish, or whether Arafat Minhas holds up bowling in the middle overs, this is a cleaner test than a season of rotation.
Who is missing
The absentee list is the tournament’s obvious limit. Pakistan’s Test squad will be in England while this is being played, with the first of three World Test Championship matches starting at Headingley on 19 August, the day after the Multan final. Abrar Ahmed is out too, contracted to Sunrisers Leeds for the Hundred after going for £190,000 at the competition’s first men’s auction.
So this is the best available pool rather than the best pool, and results should be read that way. It is a selection exercise, not a full-strength trial.
Aqib Javed on what the PCB wants from it
Aqib Javed, the PCB’s director of high performance, put the purpose on record in a statement on the board’s website.
“We have arranged this high-profile 50-over competition to provide ample playing opportunities to our best available pool of players for ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 preparations,” he said. “The teams have been assembled keeping in mind the roles of the players in the 50-over game.”
The phrase that matters there is “keeping in mind the roles”. Pakistan’s ODI trouble across recent cycles has rarely been a shortage of ability. It has been clarity about who bats where and who bowls when the game is being decided. Fixed elevens and pre-assigned roles are a reasonable way to chase an answer.
The name has history
Pakistan ran a Champions One-Day Cup in September 2024, and it was a considerably louder production: five teams, the country’s top 150 cricketers, PKR 30 million to the winners, and a mentor attached to each side, among them Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq. The following year the branding disappeared and a quieter white-ball competition took its place.
What arrives in August is smaller in every dimension. Four teams rather than five, one venue rather than a national spread, coaches rather than mentors. Misbah is back, incidentally, this time as head coach of Pakistan Gold.
Eight days against a 2027 deadline
The 2027 World Cup runs from 4 October to 21 November in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and it expands to 14 teams with two groups of seven feeding a Super Six stage. That is a long tournament in conditions that reward disciplined 50-over cricket, and it is a little over a year away.
Seven matches in Multan will not build a squad for it. They will give the selectors something a T20 league cannot: a sample of Pakistan’s next tier playing the actual format, in fixed roles, with nowhere to hide.
