Pakistan were 55 all out two days ago, and tonight they must beat a team they have never played
Hong Kong have lost both their games and Pakistan have just made their lowest T20I score. One of them will be playing Sri Lanka in a semi-final on Friday.

Two days ago Pakistan were bowled out for 55 by India, the lowest total they have ever made in a women’s T20I. Tonight in Dubai they play Hong Kong, a side they have never faced in the format, and a semi-final place is sitting on it. Win and Pakistan go through as Group A runners-up. Lose and the second qualifying spot goes to a net run rate calculation involving three teams.
How Group A actually stands
India have won all three of their matches, are on six points with a net run rate of 5.471, and cannot be caught. Thailand have finished their group with two points and a net run rate of minus 2.050. Pakistan have two points from two games at minus 0.569. Hong Kong have played two and lost two.
So the arithmetic is simple at one end and messy at the other. A Pakistan win puts them on four points and settles it. A Hong Kong win leaves Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong all on two, and the place goes to whoever has the best net run rate at that point. Pakistan start that scenario in front of Thailand by a wide margin, which means the size of any defeat matters as much as the defeat itself.
Both of these teams have had a bad time batting
Pakistan’s collapse on Saturday was total. They were 27 without loss and then lost six wickets for eight runs, Shree Charani taking 3 for 7 in the middle of it. The 55 went past their previous worst of 56, made against New Zealand in Dubai in 2024. Before that they had beaten Thailand on 1 September, posting 119 and defending it by 35 runs, so the form line is one decent effort and one that does not bear looking at.
Hong Kong have not been much better. India bowled them out for 56 on 3 September chasing 194, a 137-run defeat. Their opening game against Thailand was the closer one, and arguably the better performance, even though they lost it. Marina Lamplough took 4 for 11 in four overs to hold Thailand to 120 for 9, and Hong Kong got to 114 for 7 before running out of balls. Six runs short, and it is still their only competitive innings of the tournament.
Nobody has a form guide for this one
Pakistan and Hong Kong have never met in a T20 international. There is no head-to-head, no previous meeting to lean on, nothing to tell either captain what to expect beyond what both have shown in Dubai over the last ten days. Dubai has been a low-scoring ground for everyone except India, who made 193 for 5 against Hong Kong. Take India out of it and the totals in the two groups read 55, 56, 114, 114, 115 and 120. Whoever bats first here is probably defending something in that range.
What the winner walks into
Second place in Group A comes with a reward that is not obviously a reward. Sri Lanka topped Group B with three wins from three, beating Bangladesh by four wickets on Sunday, and the defending champions take the Group A runner-up in the second semi-final on Friday 11 September.
India, as Group A winners, play the second-placed side from Group B in the first semi-final on Thursday 10 September. That opponent will be Bangladesh or the UAE, who are level on two points and meet in Dubai on Tuesday. The final is on 13 September.
