New Zealand were the last side to beat India in a Ranchi T20I, and West Indies get their turn on Friday
India take a ten-match winning run to Ranchi for the second T20I, at a ground where they have won three of their four T20Is.
Oct 8, 2026
The last side to beat India in a T20I in Ranchi was New Zealand, by 21 runs in January 2023. No men’s T20I has been played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex since then. That changes on Friday, 9 October, when West Indies arrive for the second match of the five-game series, 1-0 down after Tuesday’s eight-wicket defeat in Lucknow. The first ball is at 7pm IST.
Four T20Is in Ranchi, three India wins
India’s first T20I here, against Sri Lanka in February 2016, brought 196 for 6. It is still the highest T20I total at the ground, and Sri Lanka finished 69 runs short. In October 2017 rain cut the game against Australia down to a sprint: Australia made 118 for 8 in 18.4 overs, and India knocked off a revised target in 5.3 overs to win by nine wickets. New Zealand made 153 for 6 in November 2021, and India got there with 16 balls to spare.
Then came the one defeat. New Zealand posted 176 for 6 in 2023, and India were held to 155 for 9.
That is a short record, but it points one way. Only twice has a side gone past 160 here, and no team has successfully chased more than 155. In Lucknow, 171 was nowhere near enough for West Indies. In Ranchi, only two sides have ever made more.
Ten wins in a row for India
India have not lost a T20I since England beat them by 56 runs in Southampton on 11 July. Since then they have won three in Zimbabwe, three against Afghanistan in Delhi, three at the Asian Games on the way to gold, and the series opener on Tuesday. The only interruption was a washout against Afghanistan in Japan.
Shreyas Iyer’s hundred in Lucknow came off 42 balls, and he finished unbeaten on 102 from 43. India needed only 14.4 overs to chase 172, with Ishan Kishan on 37 not out from 27 at the other end. Naman Dhir’s 3 for 31 on debut will also make him hard to leave out.
What West Indies have to fix
West Indies have lost their last six T20Is against India in India. Their most recent win over India in the country was in Thiruvananthapuram in December 2019, an eight-wicket chase, and India now lead the overall head-to-head 21-10, with one no result in 32 games.
The batting gave them something to work with on Tuesday. Shai Hope made 52 from 37 balls and Sherfane Rutherford 56 from 34. The bowling is the worry. Matthew Forde’s two overs went for 39, and nobody took a wicket after Kishan and Iyer came together. Hope has two days to find a plan for Iyer. If West Indies win the toss, I’d bat first and back the bowlers to defend 170 on a ground where nobody has chased more than 155.
After Ranchi, the series moves on to Indore on Sunday, then Hyderabad on 14 October and Bengaluru on 17 October.
