Antigua and Barbuda Falcons were 80 for 5 in the 14th over at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on 25 August, and their captain had 12 runs from 12 balls to show for his time at the crease. Moeen Ali finished 56 not out from 37, the Falcons posted 155 for 5, and Barbados Tridents were bowled out for 125. The 30-run win put Antigua back on top of the Caribbean Premier League table.
Moeen left it very late. He was still scoring at a run a ball, with one four to his name, when Shadab Khan fell to make it 80 for 5 with 41 deliveries left. Shamar Springer joined him and contributed 19 from 16. The two added an unbroken 75, and 20 of those came in the final over, bowled by Daniel Sams, with Moeen hitting six, six, six off the first three balls. He ended with three fours and four sixes.
The rest of the innings was a grind. Rahkeem Cornwall was yorked by Sams off the first ball of the match, rain stopped play with the Falcons on 6 for 1 after 2.1 overs, and Amir Jangoo’s 26 took him 24 balls. Karima Gore made 27 from 23. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the pick of the Tridents’ bowlers with 2 for 32. Everything up to Springer’s arrival had produced 80 runs from 79 balls.
Four wickets for two runs
Barbados were 93 for 3 in the 13th over, needing 63 from 43 balls, and Kevlon Anderson had just made 22 from 16 to give the chase some shape. Then it fell apart in the space of six deliveries. Anderson picked out Springer off the fifth ball of the 13th over. Sherfane Rutherford was caught first ball off the next one, substitute fielder Anderson Phillip taking it in the deep. Rivaldo Clarke, the top scorer with 27 from 26, went two balls into the 14th, and Gudakesh Motie followed two balls after that. Four wickets had gone down for two runs.
Joshua James took three of the ten, and 3 for 18 from three overs earned him the player-of-the-match award. Shadab Khan removed Clarke and Motie in his 2 for 23, Alzarri Joseph had knocked over both openers inside the powerplay to leave Barbados 45 for 2, and Sufyan Moqim took the last two wickets in the 18th over. Nobody in the Tridents’ order beyond Clarke, Anderson and Zachary Carter, who hit 17 from 10 at the top, got past 16.

The two points took the Falcons to eight from seven matches, more games than anyone else in the competition has played. That is the whole story of this table. The CPL has gone to seven teams this season and spread 39 matches across eight host nations, so the fixture list arrives in uneven lumps, and the standings reward whoever has already had their turn.
Guyana Amazon Warriors are second on six points from three games, all won, with a net run rate of plus 2.991 that nobody else is close to. St Lucia Kings have the same six points from six matches. The Falcons’ own net run rate is minus 0.371, the worst of the four sides currently occupying playoff places, and their four wins have come by two wickets, by three wickets, by five wickets and now by 30 runs. Two nights before this they were bowled out for 116 and beaten by Guyana with more than ten overs to spare.
Barbados, who play as the Tridents again this season after five years as the Barbados Royals under a three-year partnership that made the island’s government a minority co-investor, sit fifth on four points from three. Quinton de Kock made 16 and captain Chris Green was stranded on 9. They face Trinbago Knight Riders at Queen’s Park Oval on 28 August, while the Falcons travel to Warner Park to meet St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on 30 August.
