Los Angeles Knight Riders edge Washington Freedom by a run for their first MLC title

The Los Angeles Knight Riders have a trophy at last. In a final that came down to the very last pair, they defended 164 against Washington Freedom at the Oakland Coliseum and held on to win by a single run, sealing the first Major League Cricket title in the franchise’s history.

Freedom needed to see out the closing overs and could not quite get there, finishing on 163 for 9 after the full 20. One more run, one cleaner swing at the death, and the story is different. Instead it was the Knight Riders who piled onto the turf, a side run by the same Knight Riders Group that owns Kolkata Knight Riders, turning their first appearance in an MLC final into a first trophy.

A total that always looked a few short

Sent in after Washington won the toss and chose to field, Los Angeles were bowled out for 164 with two balls of their innings to spare. On a night when both attacks found grip, it was the kind of total that felt gettable and naggingly light at the same time, the sort a chasing side backs itself to knock off and a bowling side senses it can defend if it holds its lines.

Sunil Narine walked away with the player-of-the-match award, leading from the front on the night his side finally got over the line. He has spent his career winning trophies in Knight Riders colours, and he added another by marshalling the defence of a total that gave his bowlers almost no room for error.

Washington run out of road

The chase never settled into anything comfortable. Wickets kept falling in a cluster whenever Freedom threatened to break clear, and by the closing overs they were leaning on their lower order to drag them home. They got within touching distance, but the equation kept nudging out of reach, and the last over arrived with the batters needing more than they could find. Nine down and a run adrift when the innings ended, Washington were left to rue a chase that had everything but a finish.

For Washington, this one will sting more than most. Champions in 2024, they have now lost the final two years running by the cruellest of margins, beaten by five runs by MI New York in 2025 and now by a single run here. A third straight appearance in the final has brought a second successive runners-up medal, and this time they were undone by a total they would have backed themselves to chase on most other nights.

A first for the Knight Riders name

The Knight Riders reached the final the hard way, edging the San Francisco Unicorns by seven runs in the qualifier on the back of Rovman Powell’s blistering 15-ball fifty, then the fastest in the competition’s history. That momentum carried into the decider, where a squad packed with familiar T20 names like Powell, Andre Russell, Colin Munro and Alex Hales finally clicked when it counted.

A one-run final is the sort of margin that could easily have gone the other way, and both dugouts knew it. But titles are settled on the night, not on the balance of play, and it was Los Angeles who found the nerve to close it out. In their first final, the Knight Riders have landed a maiden Major League Cricket crown, and they earned it by the finest margin the game offers.
