Klaasen, Miller and Allen sign for the ILT20, and every UAE player now goes to the auction
Three IPL regulars are heading to the UAE for the first time. The bigger change sits underneath: no UAE player can be retained, and every squad has to carry four Afghans and an Irishman.

Three batters who spent this April and May in IPL dugouts are going to spend December in the UAE. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller have signed for Gulf Giants, Finn Allen has gone to Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, and all three will be playing the DP World ILT20 for the first time. Marcus Stoinis is going back to Dubai Capitals after three years away.
Four picks each, then the auction
Every one of the six franchises was allowed four pre-auction signings, and the rest of the squad has to come from the bidding on 1 October in Dubai. Registration for that auction closes on 12 September. Squads run to somewhere between 21 and 23 players, so the four early picks are the only part of a roster a team gets to choose outright.
Gulf Giants used two of theirs on the South Africans. Klaasen has been a full-time franchise cricketer since he walked away from international cricket in June 2025, and Miller is the sort of finisher who has been solving other people’s death overs for a decade. Abu Dhabi Knight Riders took Allen, who opens the way a team hopes an opener will open and gets out the same way. James Vince, who has spent his entire ILT20 career at Gulf Giants, has moved the other way to Sharjah Warriorz.
The retentions tell you what each side thinks it already has. Abu Dhabi kept Jason Holder and Sunil Narine. Defending champions Desert Vipers held on to Andries Gous and Dan Lawrence. MI Emirates kept Nicholas Pooran, Rashid Khan and Romario Shepherd, which is most of a T20 side on its own.
The rule that changes the auction
No UAE player can be retained or signed directly this time. All of them go into the auction, every one, and a franchise that wants to keep last year’s man now has to sit through the bidding and match somebody else’s price for him.
The quota underneath that rule is what makes it bite. Each squad needs at least four UAE players, of whom one must be capped and one must be under 23, and two UAE players have to be in the starting eleven. Teams that need a UAE middle-order batter on 1 October will be bidding against five others who need the same thing on the same afternoon. At last October’s auction the two priciest UAE players, Junaid Siddique at 170,000 dollars and Muhammad Rohid at 140,000, were both kept by their existing sides on a matched bid, and that was in a market where the good ones had not all been thrown in at once.
And a second quota nobody asked for
From this season each franchise also has to sign at least four Afghanistan players and one from Ireland. ESPNcricinfo reported that team officials are unhappy about it, on two counts. The first is arithmetic: once you stack four Afghans, four UAE players and an Irishman into a squad, close to half of a starting eleven is spoken for before anyone picks a best team. The second is precedent, and the worry that the league signs a similar deal with another board next year and the squad sheet shrinks again. Officials also said they would have liked to be asked first.
The league’s reasoning is availability. ILT20 sits in a window that has repeatedly collided with SA20 and the Big Bash, and players who commit to one of those cannot commit here. Afghanistan and Ireland are two boards whose players are not being pulled in three directions in December, which is a practical answer to a scheduling problem, even if the franchises would rather have solved it themselves.
When it happens
Season five runs from 22 November to 20 December, 34 matches across the three UAE grounds. That is a shade earlier than the season just gone, which started on 2 December and finished on 4 January with Desert Vipers beating MI Emirates by 46 runs for their first title. The league moved out of its original January window to get clear of a crowded start to the year, which is the same problem the new quotas are trying to solve from the other end.
No Indian men will be in any of it. The BCCI does not release active players to overseas leagues, so for an Indian audience this is a tournament watched for the players we know from somewhere else. Klaasen was at Sunrisers Hyderabad this year, Miller at Delhi Capitals, Allen at Kolkata Knight Riders. Four months after the IPL ends, the same names turn up in Dubai wearing different colours, and the auction on 1 October will decide how many more of them do.
