East Zone batted all of day two of the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai and were bowled out for 708, with Ishan Kishan making 270 either side of retiring hurt.

East Zone resumed on 385 for 4 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday and did not stop until the last over before stumps, when Mukesh Kumar was caught and bowled to close the innings on 708. That is 323 runs on the second day of the Duleep Trophy final for six wickets, and South Zone did not face a ball of their first innings.
Kishan left the field on 250 and came back for 270
Ishan Kishan was 111 not out overnight. He reached 150 off 204 balls, 200 off 270, and by the time he had 250 from 301 balls he had hit five more sixes in those fifty runs alone. Then, at 611 for 5 in the 131st over, he retired hurt.
He was back out at 680 for 7 in the 151st over and batted on to 270 from 334 balls with 30 fours and seven sixes, until Tripurana Vijay had him caught by Ravichandran Smaran with the total on 708. It falls just short of the 273 he made for Jharkhand in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy, his highest score in first-class cricket.
Kishan is 28 and this is not a comeback story in the usual sense. He made 54 off 25 balls in India’s T20 World Cup final win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad in March. What he has done in Chennai is the opposite kind of innings, 334 balls of it, while captaining the side and keeping wicket.
Kushagra’s first hundred in the competition
Kumar Kushagra resumed on 63 and reached his hundred off 128 balls with eight fours and five sixes. It is his sixth in first-class cricket and his first in the Duleep Trophy, and he is 21. He fell for 101 in the 101st over, caught by Chama Milind off Vijay, which ended a fifth-wicket stand of 230.
Kishan and Kushagra keep wicket for the same state side, Jharkhand, and between them they took East Zone from 241 for 4 to 471 for 5. Anukul Roy then made 45 off 98 balls, Md Kounain Quraishi 40 off 91, and Mohammed Shami 28 off 51 with four fours in it.
Siraj bowled 25 overs and took nothing
Mohammed Siraj’s final figures were 25 overs, three maidens, 140 runs, no wicket. South Zone brought him into this final and he has now bowled 25 overs in it without a dismissal.
Vijay was the one who kept getting the wickets, ending with 4 for 180 from 42 overs. Shreyas Gopal, playing his 100th first-class match, bowled the same 42 overs for 165 and two wickets. Milind took 2 for 88, Shaik Rasheed had Roy lbw, and MD Nidheesh’s 15 overs cost 58 without a wicket. Eight bowlers were used in all, Devdutt Padikkal and Ricky Bhui among them.
South Zone bat on Tuesday, 708 behind
South Zone have Narayan Jagadeesan, Bhui, Padikkal, Rasheed, captain Tilak Varma and Smaran to come, so the batting is there. The time is the problem. They start on Tuesday morning with three days left, and a drawn knockout in this competition goes to whoever leads on first innings, which means the number they actually have to pass is 708.
The other figure worth holding onto is 4.34, the rate East Zone scored at across 163 overs. Chepauk has given the bowlers close to nothing for two days, and South Zone have to bat on the same pitch for most of the rest of the match.
