Jordan Silk made 142 chasing 384, and Tasmania still lost by seven runs

Tasmania needed 18 off the last over at Karen Rolton Oval and got ten of them. South Australia had made 383 for 7, Tasmania finished on 376 for 8, and 759 runs in a day in Adelaide came down to a seven-run margin.

The loudest innings belonged to the losing side. Jordan Silk made 142 from 106 balls, reached his hundred off 79, and dragged a chase that looked finished at 57 for 3 back to within touching distance. The result belonged to three South Australian batters who each got close to a hundred and none of whom reached one.

Weatherald back at his old home, against his old side

Jake Weatherald spent three seasons in Tasmania, earned a Test call-up from there, and has moved back to South Australia for this season. On Wednesday he batted at No. 3 against the state he had just left and made 92 from 89 balls, with six fours and four sixes.

It was a useful day for a player whose August went badly. Australia dropped him on 18 August after the nine-wicket loss to Bangladesh in Darwin, where he made 23 and a duck, and he left the Test side averaging 20.36. Coach Andrew McDonald was blunt about the technique at the time. A List A 92 does not change that conversation, but it is the right kind of number to be putting up in September.

Fraser-McGurk and Gilkes did the heavy lifting

Jake Fraser-McGurk set it up. He and Mackenzie Harvey put on 120 for the first wicket in 13.4 overs, and Fraser-McGurk’s share was 88 from 47 balls with nine fours and six sixes. Harvey made 41.

Matthew Gilkes finished it. The wicketkeeper-batter, another off-season arrival after seven seasons with New South Wales, was 97 not out from 65 balls with 14 fours when the 50 overs ran out. Three short of a hundred is an odd way to top-score, but 383 was the total that mattered.

Mitch Owen took 2 for 39 from five overs and Matt Kuhnemann 2 for 71 from nine. Riley Meredith’s ten overs cost 59.

Silk nearly made 383 look small

Owen started the chase by hitting four sixes in a 26 off 13 balls, and then Tasmania lost him, Caleb Jewell and Beau Webster inside nine overs. At 57 for 3 the game looked done.

Silk and Tim Ward put on 110 in 12.2 overs to change that. Ward made 61 from 45 balls, and Silk took the equation down to 60 from the last seven overs before Henry Thornton bowled him. It was Silk’s highest score in the competition.

After that the South Australian bowlers shared the finish. Thornton, Ben Manenti and Nathan McAndrew all took two wickets, and 18 from six balls proved too many for the tail.

For Tasmania it will sting. You do not often score 376 in a one-day game and lose. South Australia, with Manenti standing in as captain, go to the Junction Oval to play Victoria on 12 October.
