Nepal’s push for direct qualification to the 2027 World Cup got off to a poor start on Tuesday, as Namibia bowled them out for 157 and knocked off the runs with eight wickets to spare in Utrecht. The result, in the opening game of a tri-series that also involves hosts the Netherlands, leaves Nepal with ground to make up in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 standings.
Nepal never get going with the bat
Batting first at Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd, Nepal could not find a partnership to build around. Captain Rohit Paudel top-scored with 31 and Dipendra Singh Airee made 30, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Namibia’s JJ Smit did most of the damage, running through the innings to finish with 6 for 27 and pick up the player-of-the-match award, and Nepal were bundled out for 157 inside 47 overs. Once the top order had gone, the lower order could only add a few useful cameos rather than a total worth defending.
Frylinck steers the chase
Chasing 158, Namibia rarely looked troubled. Michael van Lingen gave the reply a solid base with 51 at the top, and Jan Frylinck finished the job with an unbeaten 77 off 89 balls. Namibia reached their target at 159 for 2 in 37.4 overs, the margin underlining how comfortable the pursuit turned out to be once the openers had taken the sting out of Nepal’s attack.
The qualification stakes
League 2 doubles as the qualifying pathway for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, with the top four sides moving through to the Qualifier and the rest facing a harder route via the play-off. Nepal came into this series sitting fifth and Namibia seventh, so both badly wanted a strong week in the Netherlands. Namibia have taken the early advantage. Nepal, who next face the Netherlands on Thursday, will need to turn things around quickly if they are to stay in the direct-qualification conversation.
