India retake the No.1 T20I ranking from England on a rounding error
Two weeks after England’s 4-0 win pushed India off a place they had held since 2022, the same 268-268 tie has broken the other way.

India are back at the top of the ICC men’s T20I team rankings, and the gap between them and England is the kind you cannot see on the table. Both sides sit on 268 rating points in the list published on Sunday. India are placed first because of decimal places the ICC does not print.
The same tie, decided the other way
This is the second time this month the two teams have been separated by rounding. When England completed a 4-0 win in the T20I series at home in mid-July, both sides finished on 268 and it was England who were put on top. That result ended a spell at No.1 that India had held since February 2022, a run of 1,605 days.
The slide that cost India the ranking took barely a fortnight. A 2-0 defeat in Ireland started it, ending a streak of 16 consecutive T20I series wins and handing Ireland their first victory over India in any format at the ninth attempt. The Southampton finale finished it, Jos Buttler making 131 and Harry Brook an unbeaten 95 as England posted 257 for 3, with India 56 runs short in reply. No India side had lost four matches in a bilateral T20I series before, and by the end of it they had gone seven matches without a win.
What Harare changed
The correction has come from a squad that looks nothing like the one beaten in England. Shreyas Iyer, who took the job over from Suryakumar Yadav and whose first two series in charge produced six defeats and a washout, took a young group to Zimbabwe and won the opener by seven wickets. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 18-ball fifty in that chase made him, at 15 years and 118 days, the youngest man to make a half-century in international cricket, surpassing Nepal’s Kushal Malla, who was 15 years and 340 days old when he reached the mark in 2020.
Saturday’s second match was the one that moved the numbers. India made 219 for 5, Ishan Kishan scoring 81 and Tilak Varma finishing unbeaten on 60 from 29 balls, the pair adding 94 in 44 deliveries. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 129, Abhishek Sharma taking 3 for 17. The 90-run win sealed the series with a game in hand, gave Iyer his first series win as captain, and pushed India’s rating back level with England on the right side of the split.
Kishan’s innings carried a personal marker too. His 783 runs in 22 T20Is in 2026 took him past Virat Kohli’s 781 from 20 matches in 2022, and left him behind only Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma among Indian batters for runs in a calendar year.
A lead worth almost nothing
Rating points in the ICC system work as an average, so the size of the sample matters as much as the results. India’s 268 comes from 60 matches inside the ranking window, England’s from 38. That makes India’s number harder to shift in either direction, and England’s more likely to swing on a single series.
Behind them, Australia are third on 260 and New Zealand fourth on 247, with South Africa on 244 and Pakistan on 240. Zimbabwe are 12th on 202, which is part of why beating them adds so little. The system pays you for results against sides above you and returns very little for beating those well below.
The series finale in Harare on Sunday will move the figure again, in one direction or the other. On a tie this fine, a defeat to a team ranked 12th would be enough to hand the position straight back.
