India have won every completed T20I in Hyderabad, and a fourth would seal the series against West Indies

India lead West Indies 2-1 going into Wednesday’s fourth T20I at Uppal, where they have won all three completed T20Is, including a 208 chase against the same opponents in 2019.

India have won every completed T20I in Hyderabad, and a fourth would seal the series against West Indies

India lead West Indies 2-1 with two games left, and they can close out the T20I series at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, 14 October. The match starts at 7pm IST. If West Indies win, the series goes to a decider in Bengaluru on 17 October.

The ground has been good to India. Four T20Is have been played at Uppal. The first, against Australia in October 2017, was washed out without a ball bowled. India won the other three, and in each of them they also won the toss.

Three wins, one of them against West Indies

West Indies have been here before. In December 2019 they made 207 for 5, Shimron Hetmyer top-scoring, and India chased it down with eight balls to spare. Virat Kohli made 94 not out off 50 balls and added 100 for the second wicket with KL Rahul. At the time it was India’s highest successful chase in T20Is.

In September 2022 Australia set 187 in a series decider, and Suryakumar Yadav’s 69 off 36 and Kohli’s 63 took India home with a ball left. Then in October 2024 India made 297 for 6 against Bangladesh, the highest T20I total by a Test-playing nation at that point. Sanju Samson hit 111 off 47, the first T20I hundred at the venue, and India won by 133 runs.

Two of those three wins came chasing, which whoever calls correctly at the toss on Wednesday will have noticed.

How the series got here

Shreyas Iyer’s 102 not out off 43 balls won the opener in Lucknow, where India chased 172 with eight wickets in hand. Shai Hope matched it with 102 not out in Ranchi, and West Indies chased 250 against an India total of 249 for 5. Indore was different. The pitch was slow and kept low, India were bowled out for 223 off the last ball, and Arshdeep Singh’s 3 for 44 held West Indies to 209 for 7. India won by 14 runs.

Abhishek Sharma’s 69 off 30 was the only fifty in Indore, on a surface where nobody else on either side got past 43. Hyderabad should be friendlier to the batters, which suits him and also suits a West Indies side that has already chased 250 on this tour.

What to watch

Arshdeep against Hope early on is the obvious one. In Indore he bowled the West Indies captain for 5 in the second over. In Ranchi, where Hope made 102 not out, his side got to 252 for 4.

The other is India’s middle order. They were 115 for 1 in the ninth over in Indore and still got bowled out. Roston Chase had Ishan Kishan stumped and Iyer lbw three balls later, and Tilak Varma and Axar Patel were both run out. On a better pitch, 223 might have looked short. India will not want to find out in Hyderabad.

I would make India favourites, given the venue and the way their bowlers handled Indore. But this West Indies side has chased 352 in an ODI and 250 in a T20I on this tour. Nothing they set or chase on Wednesday should feel finished until the last over.
