India play Bangladesh in the second Asian Games semi-final on Sunday at 10:30am IST, at the Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, with a place in Tuesday’s gold medal match for the winner.
They met in a semi-final nine days ago, in Dubai, at the Women’s Asia Cup. That one did not go to the last over.
One team has played, the other has not
The women’s tournament in Japan is a straight knockout with eight teams and no group stage, which means India’s entire campaign so far amounts to one afternoon of work. They bowled Japan out for 57 in the quarter-final and knocked off the runs in five overs, Shafali Verma finishing on 40 not out from 15 balls.
Bangladesh have not batted or bowled at all. Their quarter-final against China was called off with a wet outfield and they went through as the higher seed, so they walk into a semi-final cold, against a side that has already had a hit.
Whether that matters over 20 overs is a fair question. Match practice is worth less in T20 than it is in a Test, and Bangladesh’s bowlers will at least be fresh. But there is a difference between fresh and rusty, and nobody in their camp will know which one they are until the fourth or fifth over.
The Dubai semi-final is the better guide
On 10 September in Dubai, India made 149 for 6 and won by 40 runs. Shafali Verma made 64 from 40 balls in an innings that could have ended four times, with chances going down when she was on 6, 11, 50 and 56. Harmanpreet Kaur finished unbeaten on 24. Bangladesh replied with 109 for 7 and India went through to a sixth Asia Cup final in six editions.
The wider record is just as one-sided. India have won 21 of the 24 women’s T20 internationals between the countries, and have not lost to them since 2023.
India are defending the gold they won in Hangzhou
Cricket’s last appearance at these Games ended with India beating Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final. Smriti Mandhana made 46, Jemimah Rodrigues 42, and Titas Sadhu took 3 for 6 to leave Sri Lanka 14 for 3 inside five overs. India had skipped the sport at previous Asian Games; they turned up, and won it at the first attempt.
The other semi-final, Pakistan against Sri Lanka, starts at 5:30am IST on the same morning. Sri Lanka got past Malaysia by posting 160 for 4 and holding them to 74 for 7. Pakistan beat Thailand in a game cut short by rain.
The gold and bronze medal matches are both on 22 September at the same ground.
