India and England are level on 269 rating points, and England have just swept Sri Lanka 3-0

England were 82 for 1 at the end of the powerplay at Old Trafford, chasing 125. They finished it in the 10th over, by eight wickets, with 62 balls unused. That is a 3-0 sweep, and it means Sri Lanka’s last two totals in this series have been chased in 12.1 overs at Cardiff and 9.4 here.

At the top of the ICC men’s T20I team rankings, India and England are both on 269 rating points. India hold the No. 1 spot on the decimal, with 17,201 points from 64 matches against England’s 10,742 from 40. Australia are third on 260. That is worth holding in mind while reading the rest of this, because England have won three T20Is in five days and none of them were close.

Sri Lanka lost their last four wickets for 10 runs

Harry Brook put Sri Lanka in and they were 124 all out with seven balls of their innings unused. Pathum Nissanka made 36 from 24 with three sixes and Kamindu Mendis 35 from 28. Nobody else passed 16.

The innings held together to 114 for 6, Kamindu falling in the 16th over, and then came apart. Tharindu Ratnayake was bowled by Jamie Overton, Eshan Malinga was run out, Wanindu Hasaranga trod on his own stumps, and Dilshan Madushanka was caught. Four wickets for 10 runs, one of them a run out, one a hit wicket.

Overton’s four overs cost 15. Sonny Baker took 2 for 17, Jofra Archer 2 for 23, and Will Jacks, bowling off spin, 2 for 31 from four. Liam Dawson had 1 for 17 from two. Adil Rashid was the only England bowler not to take a wicket, and he bowled two overs.

Fifty in 25 balls, and 17 wides

England’s reply was faster than the target deserved. Their fifty came up off the 25th ball of the innings. Aneurin Donald hit three fours in a 13 from six before Ratnayake had him stumped, and the hundred arrived in the eighth over.

Jos Buttler and Brook put on 50 in 17 balls. Brook was run out by Hasaranga for 33 from 21. Buttler finished unbeaten on 62 from 32, his fifty taking 30 balls, with seven fours and two sixes, and the last four balls Malinga bowled went for 18.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers also gave England 17 wides. Eighteen of the 126 runs England made were extras, and only one of those was a no-ball.

What Sri Lanka take to the ODIs

Very little from this format, on the week’s evidence. They lost the first T20I at Southampton by 119 runs after England made 254 for 4, lost the second at Cardiff, and were beaten again here. Their three totals read 135, 145 and 124, and they have not bowled England out once.

The ODIs start at Chester-le-Street on 22 September and finish at The Oval on 27 September, the day India open their home season against West Indies at Thiruvananthapuram. Kusal Mendis captains Sri Lanka in that format, which at least means a fresh set of problems.
