India A lost five wickets for 35, and Shedge and Nigam’s stand of 85 still beat Australia A by 49 runs

For the first time in the series, India A’s openers got going. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh put on 83 in 10.4 overs at the Cricket Association Pondicherry Siechem Ground on Sunday, 11 October. Then five wickets went for 35, and it took a seventh-wicket stand between Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam to rebuild the innings and set up a 49-run win.

The series was already gone. Australia A’s 69-run win on Friday had put them 2-0 up, so they take it 2-1.

From 83 without loss to 118 for 5

Australia A won the toss and bowled, which meant India A batted first for the first time in the series. Arya made 49 from 45 balls and Prabhsimran 39 from 34, and India A had 82 on the board at the end of the first ten overs. Liam Scott broke the stand when he had Prabhsimran caught by McSweeney, and soon afterwards he had Devdutt Padikkal caught for 2.

Ben Dwarshuis took Arya one short of his fifty, caught by Lachlan Shaw, and then held a return catch to get rid of Rajat Patidar for 3. Patidar had made 53 and 67 in the first two games. When Will Sutherland caught Nishant Sindhu off his own bowling, India A were 118 for 5 in the 20th over.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain, hung around while Shedge got himself in. He made 33 from 57 balls before Mitchell Owen bowled him with the score on 159 in the 30th over.

Shedge and Nigam add 85

Shedge only joined the squad before the series as the replacement for Hardik Pandya, and this was his second big contribution in three games. He took 4 for 40 in the opener on Tuesday, a game Australia A won by 125 runs. Here he hit seven fours and two sixes in 66 from 60 balls.

Nigam, batting at eight, made 40 from 44 with six fours, and the pair added 85 for the seventh wicket. Sutherland got both of them, Nigam at 244 and Shedge at 263, to finish with 3 for 44. Anukul Roy’s 13 not out took India A to 275, all out in 47.3 overs. Dwarshuis took 3 for 38.

Philippe’s fifty, then the slide

Australia A’s chase began the way India A’s innings had. Josh Philippe hit 56 from 48 balls, Scott made 26, and they were 82 without loss in the 15th over. Then two wickets fell without a run added. Nigam trapped Philippe lbw, and Sindhu had Scott caught behind by Prabhsimran.

Shaw, with 31, and McSweeney, with 39, took the score to 140 before Roy had Shaw caught by Sindhu. McSweeney fell at 177 in the 36th over, caught by the substitute Kumar Kushagra off Gurjapneet Singh, and the last six wickets went for 49. Sindhu ran out Nikhil Chaudhary for 29, Owen made 20, and Yash Thakur ended it in the 47th over when Padikkal caught Todd Murphy, who captained Australia A in this game.

Gurjapneet took 3 for 56, Thakur 2 for 35 and Sindhu 2 for 42. Nigam was named player of the match for his 40 and his 1 for 47 from ten overs.
