Fleming is England’s frontrunner for the Test job, weeks after walking away from CSK
The Telegraph reports that Stephen Fleming is set to take over England’s Test side after Brendon McCullum’s sacking, though the ECB has confirmed nothing and the start date may not come until December.

England went looking for someone to fix their Test team in the middle of July, and the name they have landed on is one Indian cricket fans have watched from the CSK dugout for the best part of two decades. The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Stephen Fleming is set to become England’s next Test head coach, and Sky Sports News has him as the clear frontrunner. Nothing has been announced by the ECB yet, so treat it as a strong steer rather than a done deal.
The timing is neat to the point of being suspicious. Fleming left Chennai Super Kings in mid-July after 18 years in charge, a stint that produced all five of the franchise’s IPL titles. Two weeks later he is the man England want.
How the job came open
Brendon McCullum was removed from the Test role on 12 July, with ECB chief executive Richard Gould saying the results had made his red-ball position untenable. The numbers behind that: seven defeats in England’s last nine Tests, a 4-1 Ashes hammering in Australia in 2025-26, and then a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand that ended at Trent Bridge with a 160-run defeat. It was England’s first home defeat in a three-Test series since 2012.
McCullum keeps the white-ball job through to the 2027 World Cup. “Of course I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision,” he said.
The dressing room he leaves behind has changed too. Ben Stokes announced during that Trent Bridge Test that he was retiring from international cricket, ending a captaincy that began in April 2022. Harry Brook, the Test vice-captain, is favourite to take over. So whoever gets the coaching job inherits a side picking a new leader at the same time.
What Fleming actually is
He is 53, and his playing career was a long argument for the value of a captain who thinks. Fleming played 111 Tests for New Zealand and led them in 80 of them between 1997 and 2006, winning 28, which no other New Zealand captain has matched. He also won the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy, still one of the very few global titles New Zealand have.
The English part of his CV is not a footnote either. He played county cricket for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and captained Nottinghamshire to the County Championship in 2005. He knows the circuit, the weather and the players’ pathway in a way most overseas candidates would not.
Then there is Chennai. Eighteen years, five titles, a working relationship with MS Dhoni that survived every rebuild and every bad season, and a reputation for calm in an environment that offers very little of it. Richard Dawson and Jonathan Trott were also considered, but neither has anything approaching that record.
The awkward bit is the calendar
England play Pakistan in three Tests starting on 19 August at Headingley, then Lord’s and Edgbaston, all of it counting towards the 2025-27 World Test Championship. It is not clear Fleming could be in place by then, and Marcus Trescothick, already on the coaching staff, could take the Pakistan series on an interim basis.
The likelier start is December, when England tour South Africa for three Tests. That gives a new coach a winter to work with rather than three weeks, which is probably the sensible way round. It also means England go into a home summer Test series with a caretaker in charge and a captain who has just got the job, which is a lot of new for one August.
