CSK host KKR at Chepauk in a bottom-of-the-table clash neither side can afford to lose

There is nothing glamorous about the ninth-versus-tenth billing Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders will carry into the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday night. Two of the IPL's most decorated franchises are locked near the foot of the 2026 table after four games each, and the winner in Chennai will walk away with more than just two points. The loser will be staring at the kind of hole even the strongest IPL sides struggle to climb out of.

Chennai arrive on the back of their only win of the season. Sanju Samson's unbeaten 115 from 56 balls tore Delhi Capitals apart on Saturday and finally put a "1" in their wins column. One result, though, does not reset a campaign that has otherwise yielded three defeats and the worst net run rate in the competition.

KKR still searching for a first win

Kolkata's position is even starker. Four matches, no wins, just one washed-out fixture to their name. Close finishes have gone the wrong way and the rebuilt squad is yet to look like it has found its rhythm. Sitting tenth with a single point, they travel to Chennai knowing that another defeat will make the playoff maths bordering on impossible.

The pitch at Chepauk is expected to play true under the afternoon sun, with forecasts of clear skies and temperatures nudging 34 degrees. Dew will matter less at Chennai than at many venues, which suits spin-heavy attacks, something both sides have leaned on through the season.

Dhoni shadow over the home side

Much of the pre-match chatter has centred on MS Dhoni's availability. The former CSK captain has been managing a fitness issue and the franchise has already flagged Tuesday as a potential return window. Whether he plays or not, the conversation around his presence illustrates how much CSK are leaning on experience to pull this season out of the fire.

For Kolkata, the focus has been on finishing what they start. Close finishes have gone against them more than once already this season. Converting pressure into results is the only thing between them and a first win of IPL 2026, and they might not get a softer assignment than a home side scrapping for form.
