Charani is the first Indian past 800 rating points, and Deepti has moved up to No. 2

A weekly rankings update is usually a footnote to a tournament. This one is not, because the number the ICC put next to Shree Charani’s name on Tuesday is one no Indian cricketer has reached in the women’s T20I lists: 804 rating points, with exactly one bowler in the history of the format ever rated higher.

Four for 20 in a final, and a barrier no Indian had cleared

Charani took four for 20 against Sri Lanka in the Women’s Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Stadium, and that spell did the work. It lifted the left-arm spinner past 800 for the first time in her career. The previous best by an Indian in the ICC’s women’s T20I rankings, batting or bowling, was Mithali Raj’s 780 in the batting list in 2011, a mark that had stood untouched for fifteen years.

Ahead of Charani now there is one name. Megan Schutt reached 806 in November 2018 and no women’s T20I bowler has been rated higher since. Charani is two points away. Sophie Ecclestone’s 802 is the only other rating to have cleared 800, which leaves the India spinner second on the all-time list.

Deepti is the closest challenger

Deepti Sharma moved up four places to second, so India’s two spinners now occupy the top two positions among T20I bowlers. Deepti finished the Asia Cup as its leading wicket-taker with 14, and her three for 19 in the final came at the other end from Charani’s four for 20. Charani ended the tournament with 12.

Two India bowlers with far less international cricket behind them moved a long way as well. Seamer Nandani Sharma went up ten places to 94th after conceding 4.64 runs an over across the tournament, and leg-spinner Prema Rawat jumped 50 places to 96th.

Shafali and Mandhana, four points apart

Shafali Verma rose from seventh to sixth among the batters on 741 points, her highest figure since October 2021. She was the leading run-scorer at the Asia Cup with 236, including 64 in the semi-final and 68 in the final. Smriti Mandhana sits one place and four points above her, fifth on 745 after 213 runs in five innings, which is close enough that a single good series could swap them.

Shafali picked up five places in the all-rounders’ list too, up to 15th with a career-best 221 points. At the top of the batting rankings, Australia’s Beth Mooney and Georgia Voll are unmoved.

Sri Lanka’s captain and the week’s biggest jump

Chamari Athapaththu did enough on the losing side to climb a place to 27th among the bowlers. She took 12 wickets in the tournament, a haul that includes the seven for five she produced against Indonesia, and she held on to third place in the all-rounders’ rankings. Nilakshika Silva, third on the tournament’s run charts with 108, moved up one place to 44th among the batters.

The largest jump of the week belongs to nobody from the Asia Cup at all. South Africa’s Anneke Bosch climbed 323 places to 54th after scoring 83 from 43 balls and then 65 from 31 in the opening two T20Is against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

How quickly this happened

The detail worth sitting with is the timeline. Charani made her T20I debut on 28 June 2025, took four for 13 at Trent Bridge in that first match, and reached No. 1 in the world almost exactly a year later in June 2026. On 10 September, in the Asia Cup semi-final against Bangladesh, she reached 50 T20I wickets in her 29th game, faster than any Indian bowler, man or woman, has managed it.

Ratings climb in smaller increments the closer a bowler gets to the ceiling, so the two points between Charani and Schutt’s record are not a formality. They are also the only thing left in front of her.
