Bangladesh had Cricket Australia XI 1 for 2, and Teague Wyllie’s 130 still put them behind
Six days before the first Test in Darwin, Bangladesh’s bowlers made the perfect start on day one and finished day two looking at a 73-run deficit.

Bangladesh had Cricket Australia XI 1 for 2 inside three overs at Marrara Oval on Thursday. Both openers were gone, Sam Konstas caught behind for 1 and Campbell Kellaway bowled for a duck, and the tour game that is Bangladesh’s only cricket before the first Test in Darwin was set up perfectly. They finished day two 73 runs behind.
What happened in between was Teague Wyllie. The 22-year-old, who came through Western Australia and now plays his state cricket for Tasmania, batted for 177 balls, hit 16 fours, made 130, and was the last man out when Cricket Australia XI were bowled out for 355. That is a lead of 92, built from a position where the home side had one run on the board and two wickets down.
The stand that turned the day
Bangladesh were still in it well past the halfway mark. Kurtis Patterson made 53 and was bowled by Hasan Mahmud with the score on 139 for 5, and at that point Cricket Australia XI still trailed by 124 with half the side out.
Wyllie and the wicketkeeper Jake Doran then put on 167 for the sixth wicket. Doran made 76 from 102 balls with ten fours and was the more fluent of the two for long stretches. By the time Mehidy Hasan Miraz had him caught at 306, the match had turned over completely, and the last four wickets only added another 49.
Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the Bangladesh attack with 4 for 42 from 19 overs, five of them maidens, and Konstas was the first of them. Taskin Ahmed, who bowled Kellaway in the third over, finished with two, and Miraz took two. Between them they could not stop one partnership, which is often the whole story of a first innings.
Miraz’s hundred already looked like it might not be enough
Bangladesh’s 263 on day one had come from a similar rescue. They were 194 for 9 before Miraz, unbeaten on 109 from 141 balls, and Khaled Ahmed put on the last-wicket runs that got them past 250. Corey Rocchiccioli had taken 6 for 83 from 24 overs before that.
Two innings, two recoveries from collapses, and Bangladesh still behind. The top order has now failed twice in three days. Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 84 runs between them in the first innings, and none of them reached 40.
Nineteen for two at the close
The second innings began badly enough to matter. Campbell Thompson had Shadman caught for 6 and bowled Mominul for 6, and Bangladesh closed on 19 for 2 from five overs with Tanzid Hasan on 7. Thompson’s figures at stumps read 3-0-10-2.
There is a day left, so this game can still be drawn comfortably or lost, and neither outcome will go in a record book that anybody consults. What it will do is inform selection. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side plays the first Test at this ground on 13 August, six days from now, and the batting order that has just been dismissed for 263 and then reduced to 19 for 2 is broadly the one that will walk out for it.
Konstas again
The other name worth noting is at the top of the Cricket Australia XI card. Sam Konstas made 1 from 5 balls, caught behind off Hasan Mahmud in the second over. He is not in this Test squad and this was not a trial, but for a batter whose Test career has been picked over since his debut summer against India, another cheap dismissal in a game people are watching is not what he needed.
