Australia A Women were 51 without loss on the third afternoon in Mohali, chasing 446. Seven overs and one ball later they were 56 for 5, and India A Women went on to win the one-off four-day game by 281 runs with a full day to spare.
Niki Prasad was named Player of the Match for 91 in the first innings and 7 for 77 across the game. Vaishnavi Sharma took nine wickets, six of them in the first innings. Between them, the two accounted for 16 of the 20 Australian wickets.
Vaishnavi’s six on day two
India A added 13 to their overnight 351 for 9 before Niki was caught off Lilly Mills for 91, and the total stood at 364. Mills finished with 4 for 98 from 32.3 overs.
Australia A’s openers made a decent start in reply. Captain Rachel Trenaman (44) and Tahlia Wilson (35) put on 66 before Niki bowled Wilson, and then had Trenaman lbw. After that it was Vaishnavi’s innings. The left-arm spinner took six of the last eight wickets, with Shuchi Upadhyay chipping in with two, and finished with 6 for 52 from 20.4 overs as Australia A were bowled out for 176. Nicole Faltum was left on 24 not out.
That was a lead of 188. India A batted again rather than enforce the follow-on and closed the second day on 134 for 2. Priya Punia made 59 before falling in the last over of the day.
A wobble, then Vaishnavi again
The third morning did not go to plan. Tejal Hasabnis went for a four-ball duck, and Mills removed Yastika Bhatia for 46 and Tanisha Singh first ball, off successive deliveries. Frankie Nicklin then had Niki caught for 4, and India A had gone from 134 for 2 to 156 for 6.
Anushka Sharma steadied it with 48 off 91 balls, and Vaishnavi then made 24 off 14 with five fours at No. 11. India A were all out for 257. Mills took 5 for 88, nine wickets in the match, and Nicklin took 4 for 67.
Five wickets for five runs
Trenaman and Wilson put on 51 for the first wicket again. Then Wilson was run out by Shabnam Shakil for 28, and the innings fell apart. Niki trapped Courtney Webb lbw for a duck two balls later, Vaishnavi bowled Charli Knott and had Anika Learoyd lbw, both without scoring, and Trenaman was caught by Tanisha off Niki for 26 in between. At 56 for 5, the result was settled.
Niki picked up Sianna Ginger and Milly Illingworth in quick succession to leave Australia A on 80 for 8. Tess Flintoff and Mills then batted for more than 31 overs together and added 74 for the ninth wicket, the only real resistance Australia A offered in the chase. Vaishnavi ended it by trapping Mills lbw for 32, and Niki had Flintoff caught by Sayali Satghare for 58 to close it out at 164.
Niki’s second-innings figures were 5 for 50 from 29 overs, with 10 maidens. Vaishnavi bowled 30 overs for 3 for 58 and conceded under two an over.
India A take both formats
The game was the last match of Australia A’s tour. India A had already won the one-day series 2-1 on the same Mohali ground, sealed by a chase of 363 in the decider, and this result gives them the multi-day leg as well.
For the selectors, the clearest takeaway is the spin pairing. Australia A had chased 339 in the second one-dayer here, so this is a batting group that can score. Across two innings, Vaishnavi and Niki gave them almost nothing.
