Ashutosh Sharma joins Hampshire for the One-Day Cup, a day before their campaign starts
The Delhi Capitals finisher, who holds the record for the fastest T20 fifty by an Indian, heads into nine weeks of English 50-over cricket at a county now majority-owned by Delhi’s co-owners.

Hampshire have signed Ashutosh Sharma for the whole of the One-Day Cup, and they left it late. The announcement came on July 20, roughly 24 hours before the county were due to start their campaign against Yorkshire at Scarborough.
For Indian followers the name needs no introduction, though the format might. Ashutosh has built his reputation in 20-over cricket as a finisher who bats as though the innings has eight balls left in it regardless of when he walks in. He is now heading into 50-over cricket in England, at 27, still uncapped by India.
The 11-ball fifty that made his name
Most people first noticed him in October 2023, playing for Railways against Arunachal Pradesh in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy group game at Ranchi. He reached fifty off 11 balls and finished with 53 off 12, eight sixes and a single four, a strike rate above 440. The record he broke had belonged to Yuvraj Singh for 16 years, set with a 12-ball fifty against England at the 2007 T20 World Cup.
The IPL followed. Punjab Kings gave him his debut in 2024 before Delhi Capitals picked him up for the two seasons since, and he has settled into the role Delhi wanted from him. In 26 IPL innings he has 564 runs at a strike rate close to 163, with two fifties. His List A record is thinner and reads differently: 21 matches, 458 runs at 24.10, a strike rate of 131.6, plus two wickets from 22 overs of part-time bowling.
That gap between the two columns is basically the question Hampshire are asking. A finisher’s job in a T20 is compressed into 15 or 20 balls. In a 50-over innings there is more time, which cuts both ways.
Why Hampshire, and why now
The deal did not come out of nowhere. The GMR Group, which holds a 50 per cent stake in Delhi Capitals, bought a majority holding in Hampshire in a phased deal that started at 53 per cent and is set to reach full ownership. It was the first time an overseas owner had taken control of an English county, and moving a player between two clubs under the same roof is one of the more obvious things to do with that structure.
The timing suits both sides for a less glamorous reason as well. The One-Day Cup is played alongside The Hundred, which means every county spends the competition without a chunk of its first-choice squad. Counties fill those gaps with academy players and short-term signings, and a batter with Ashutosh’s ceiling is a useful thing to have in the middle order for nine weeks.
Hampshire have unfinished business
Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, framed the signing around last season. “We’re really pleased to sign Ashutosh for the One-Day Cup,” he said. “He is a player of great potential and has done well for Delhi Capitals in the IPL recently, so knows what it’s like to perform to a high standard. We look forward to welcoming him into the group and seeing what he can do in a Hampshire shirt as we look to go one step further than last year in the competition.”
One step further means winning it. Hampshire reached the 2025 final and lost to Worcestershire by three wickets on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern, having posted 237 for 7 at Trent Bridge. It was their second defeat in a domestic final inside a week, following the Vitality Blast final against Somerset.
There is a neat symmetry to where they start this time. Hampshire beat Yorkshire by 18 runs on DLS in last year’s semi-final at Scarborough, and Scarborough is where the 2026 campaign starts.
The road ahead
The competition runs for nine weeks and ends with the final at Trent Bridge on September 20. Eighteen counties are split into two groups of nine, with the top three from each going through to the knockouts. Hampshire are in Group B alongside Yorkshire, Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, Middlesex, Sussex, Worcestershire and Derbyshire.
For Ashutosh, the value is in the exposure. Uncapped Indian players rarely get a run at 50-over cricket in English conditions on a county contract, and his List A numbers are the weakest part of a CV built almost entirely on T20 hitting. A good run in Hampshire colours would not put him in an India squad by itself. It would answer the question his record currently leaves open.
