India begin a three-match T20I series in Harare on Thursday with a second-string, youth-heavy squad, Vaibhav Suryavanshi set to open and several fringe players chasing a maiden cap.

India get their tour of Zimbabwe under way in Harare on Thursday, and the team sheet reads more like a plan for the next few years than a reward for the last one. Shreyas Iyer leads a young, largely second-string squad across three T20Is at the Harare Sports Club, with a good chunk of the side that won the T20 World Cup earlier this year left at home. Sanju Samson, who was part of that title-winning group, misses out altogether.
A top order built around teenagers and power
The name everyone will be watching is Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the teenage opener who finished as the leading run-scorer at IPL 2026. He is set to open alongside Abhishek Sharma, which hands India one of the most destructive new-ball pairings they have ever picked in the format, and also one of the greenest. Tilak Varma, named vice-captain, and Iyer himself give the middle order a bit of ballast, with Rinku Singh back in the mix and Ishan Kishan keeping wicket.
A proving ground for the fringe
For a handful of uncapped players, this tour is the opening they have been waiting on. Ashok Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh are among those in line for a maiden India cap, while express quick Mayank Yadav returns to the setup having not played for India since late 2024. With most of the first-choice names elsewhere, four days in Harare become a straight audition. The selectors want to know who holds up when the cricket is real.
Zimbabwe will fancy it at home
Zimbabwe are not here to make up the numbers. Three games at their own ground, in conditions they know well, against an India side missing most of its best XI, is about as good a chance as they get. India start as clear favourites, and their batting alone should worry any bowling attack. But a new-look team feeling its way on a slow Harare pitch is exactly the setup that breeds an upset, and the hosts will have noticed.
The first T20I starts at 4:30 PM IST on Thursday, with the second and third to follow on 25 and 26 July, all at the Harare Sports Club.
