Most triple centuries in Test cricket: Bradman, Lara, Sehwag and Gayle lead on two

No one has scored three. Don Bradman, Brian Lara, Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle have two apiece, and since the first Test in 1877 only 29 players have scored 33 triple centuries between them.

Bradman got both of his inside four years — 334 at Leeds in 1930 and 304 on the same ground in 1934. He also came within one run of a third, finishing 299 not out against South Africa at Adelaide in 1932 when he ran out of partners.

Lara’s two are the two biggest scores West Indies have ever made, both against England at St John’s and ten years apart: 375 in 1994, then 400 not out in 2004, which remains the only quadruple century in Test cricket.

The two most recent

Wiaan Mulder made 367 not out against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in July 2025, the fifth-highest score in Test history and the highest by a South African. South Africa declared with him unbeaten and 33 runs short of Lara’s record.

Harry Brook’s 317 against Pakistan at Multan in October 2024 came in an England total of 823/7d, the fourth-highest in Test cricket and the highest by any team since Sri Lanka’s 952/6d in 1997. England won by an innings and 47 runs.

India’s triple centurions

India have two triple centurions: Virender Sehwag, who did it twice, and Karun Nair.

Sehwag’s 309 against Pakistan at Multan in March 2004 was the first triple century by an India batter, and it earned him the nickname Multan ka Sultan. He added 319 against South Africa at Chennai in 2008.

Karun Nair’s 303 not out against England at Chennai in December 2016 is the only other one, and it came in his third Test. India declared on 759/7d, their highest total. He played three more Tests that season, was then out of the side for eight years, and returned for the tour of England in 2025.

The fastest of them

Sehwag’s 319 took only 304 balls, the fewest of any triple century on record — three of the 33, all scored before 1959, have no ball-by-ball count. Brook needed 322 and Mulder 334.

By scoring rate, Mulder’s 367 not out at 109.88 runs per 100 balls is the quickest, ahead of Sehwag’s 104.93 and Brook’s 98.44. At the other end, Len Hutton faced 847 balls for his 364 against Australia in 1938.

Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan have not had one. Australia’s seven have come from Bradman, Matthew Hayden, David Warner, Mark Taylor, Michael Clarke, Bob Simpson and Bob Cowper.
