Moises Henriques will captain Portugal in Finland, a month after retiring in Australia

Four weeks ago Moises Henriques retired from Australian domestic cricket as the most-capped player its system has produced. On Friday he walks out in Finland as the captain of Portugal.

That sentence takes a moment to settle. Henriques has been named captain of a 14-man Portugal squad for the T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C, which runs from 14 to 21 August at two grounds outside Helsinki, the Kerava National Cricket Ground and Tikkurila in Vantaa. He takes the job from Carlos Nunes, who stays in the squad.

Funchal to Sydney, and back again

The eligibility is not a flag of convenience. Henriques was born in Funchal, on Madeira, and his family took him to Australia when he was one year old. He has held the Portuguese connection his whole career without ever having a reason to use it. At 39, with no Big Bash contract for next season and back surgery behind him in February, he suddenly has one.

Indian audiences knew him long before Portugal did. He made his IPL debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009 and played for six franchises across 62 matches, including four seasons at Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2014 and a place in the squad that won the 2016 title. His Test debut came against India, at Chennai in 2013. He won 44 Australia caps in all, four in Tests, and played his last international in 2021.

At home he was a one-club man twice over, with New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers, finishing on 420 domestic matches across 22 years, a figure no Australian domestic cricketer has matched, and 154 Big Bash appearances, 129 of them as captain. That last number matters here. Portugal have given the armband to a man who captained the Sydney Sixers to a Big Bash final as recently as January.

The level he is actually dropping into

It would be easy to write this as a gentle victory lap. Portugal’s record suggests otherwise. At the equivalent qualifier in June 2024 they won one of their four group matches, beating Hungary and losing to Romania, Austria and Israel, then finished fifth of ten by winning a play-off against the Isle of Man. Israel are in their group again this month. Portugal have never qualified for a World Cup in any format.

The squad is not all part-timers, though. Craig Cachopa, a wicketkeeper-batter with Sussex and Auckland behind him, is in it, as is Cameron Shekleton, who has played for South Africa A, and the Bangladesh-born spinner Siraj Ullah Khadem, who made the longlist for the Hundred auction. Portugal’s cricket, like most European associate cricket, is built on players who arrived from somewhere else.

What Portugal have to do

Ten teams are in Finland, split into two groups of five. Portugal are in Group B with Israel, Germany, Greece and Czechia, and play four group matches. The group winners meet in the final on 21 August.

Win that, and Portugal go to the European regional final, where Scotland are already waiting on a bye earned by playing at the last T20 World Cup, along with Jersey and Denmark, who came through the other two sub-regional qualifiers in Cyprus in May and in Denmark in July. Two teams from that regional final go to the global qualifier. The prize at the end of all of it is a place at the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Which is the part worth sitting with. Henriques has just finished a 22-year career in Australian cricket and been let go. The only route back to a big tournament on Australian soil now runs through Kerava, Vantaa, a group with Greece and Czechia in it, and two further rounds of qualifying, at an age where he would be well past 40 by the time the tournament came around.

Most players in that position take the commentary job. He has gone to Finland instead.
