Ten of the 20 have been made since the start of 2024, and India now have seven totals of 250 or more where the old benchmark of 260 was once the only one above 250. Eighteen of the 20 were won; the two that were not are explained below.

297/6 v Bangladesh, Hyderabad, October 2024

Sanju Samson made 111 from 47 balls with 11 fours and eight sixes, Suryakumar Yadav 75 from 35 and Hardik Pandya 47 from 18. Riyan Parag chipped in with 34 from 13. India scored at 14.85 an over and won by 133 runs.

It is the third-highest T20I total made by a full-member nation, behind Zimbabwe’s 344 for 4 against Gambia and England’s 304 for 2 against South Africa at Manchester in September 2025.

283/1 v South Africa, Johannesburg, November 2024

India lost one wicket all innings. Tilak Varma finished on 120 not out from 47 balls and Sanju Samson on 109 not out from 56, the pair unseparated after Abhishek Sharma fell for 36. It remains India’s highest total away from home.

271/5 v New Zealand, Thiruvananthapuram, January 2026

Ishan Kishan’s 103 from 43 balls, with ten sixes, was the centrepiece, supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s 63 from 30 and another quick 42 from Hardik Pandya.

260/5 v Sri Lanka, Indore, December 2017

The record India held for almost seven years. Rohit Sharma made 118 from 43 balls and KL Rahul 89 from 49, and India won by 88 runs. It is the only total in the top seven made before 2024.

The two that were lost

244 for 4 against West Indies at Lauderhill in 2016 is the highest total India have made and lost. It came second, chasing 246, and India finished one run short with six wickets in hand after KL Rahul’s 110 not out from 51 balls. 222 for 3 against Australia at Guwahati in November 2023 was the other, chased down by the visitors.

Who keeps turning up

Sanju Samson has a hundred or a fifty in four of India’s seven highest totals — 111 in the 297, 109 not out in the 283, and 89 in both the 255 and the 253.

New Zealand have been on the receiving end of four of the 20, more than any other side, and all four were made in India.
