Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is the latest batter to score double centuries in consecutive Test matches. He did it against England at home in February 2024.
Jaiswal made 209 in the second Test at Visakhapatnam, which India won by 106 runs to level the series 1-1. In the next Test, at Rajkot, he made an unbeaten 214 as India won by 434 runs to go 2-1 up.
Double centuries in back-to-back Tests have been scored 14 times, by 11 players. Three of them are Indian: Vinod Kambli, Virat Kohli and Jaiswal.
Jaiswal, 22, is the third-youngest to do it. Kambli was 21 when he did it in 1993, and Don Bradman was also 21 when he first did it, in 1930.
England’s Wally Hammond was the first, with 251 at Sydney and 200 at Melbourne in the 1928-29 Ashes. He did it again in New Zealand in 1933, with 227 at Christchurch and an unbeaten 336 at Auckland.
Bradman went further and did it three times: 254 at Lord’s and 334 at Leeds in 1930, 304 at Leeds and 244 at The Oval in 1934, and 270 at Melbourne and 212 at Adelaide in the 1936-37 Ashes. No one else has done it more than twice.
After Bradman there was a 56-year wait until India’s Vinod Kambli scored 224 against England in Mumbai and 227 against Zimbabwe in Delhi in 1993. He is the only player on the list to do it against two different opponents.
The feat then came in a cluster. In 2003 South Africa’s Graeme Smith made 277 at Edgbaston and 259 at Lord’s in the first two Tests of the series in England, and Ricky Ponting made 242 at Adelaide and 257 at Melbourne against India. Kumar Sangakkara followed with 200* in Colombo and 222* in Kandy against Bangladesh in 2007, and his Sri Lanka teammate Thilan Samaraweera made 231 in Karachi and 214 in Lahore in 2009.
Michael Clarke made 259* at Brisbane and 230 at Adelaide against South Africa in 2012, and Brendon McCullum became the first New Zealander on the list with 224 in Auckland and 302 in Wellington against India in 2014. King of Cricket Virat Kohli made 213 in Nagpur and 243 in Delhi against Sri Lanka in 2017.
