The Brabourne Stadium was Mumbai’s Test ground for a quarter of a century, lost that role to the Wankhede in 1975, and then waited almost 37 years for another Test. When it finally got one in December 2009, India made 726/9 declared against Sri Lanka, their highest Test total at the time. Today the ground earns its keep in T20 cricket, and its numbers say it is the best batting surface of the Mumbai-area venues.
In the 2022 IPL, when the whole league stage was played at four grounds in Mumbai and Pune, Brabourne had the highest first-innings average of the four. In the first WPL season in 2023 it out-scored the DY Patil Stadium by almost 18 runs an innings. Here is the Brabourne Stadium pitch report, its history and its records in every format.

Brabourne Stadium pitch report: the highest-scoring ground in Mumbai
The 2022 IPL is the fairest test of how Mumbai’s grounds compare, because every league match was played at four venues in the same weeks. Brabourne came out on top.
| IPL 2022 league | Games | 1st-inns avg | Bat 1st won | Chase won |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brabourne | 16 | 177.2 | 8 | 8 |
| MCA Pune | 13 | 171.5 | 10 | 3 |
| DY Patil | 20 | 170.7 | 10 | 10 |
| Wankhede | 21 | 166.8 | 8 | 13 |
Brabourne’s first-innings average of 177.2 was 5.8 runs higher than Pune’s and 10.5 higher than the Wankhede’s. It also split evenly between the side batting first and the chasing side, 8-8, while the Wankhede went 13-8 to the chase. Captains still preferred to field: 13 of the 16 toss winners at Brabourne sent the other side in. The ground’s highest IPL total, Rajasthan Royals’ 217/5, came that season, in the game where Jos Buttler made 103 and Yuzvendra Chahal took a hat-trick in figures of 5/40.
The WPL told the same story a year later.
| WPL 2023 | Games | 1st-inns avg | Bat 1st won | Chase won |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brabourne | 11 | 165.5 | 4 | 7 |
| DY Patil | 11 | 147.7 | 3 | 8 |
In the first WPL season, Brabourne averaged 165.5 in the first innings against 147.7 at the DY Patil Stadium, the only other venue. Delhi Capitals made 223/2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening week, with Shafali Verma scoring 84. When the WPL returned for the final four games of 2025, the side batting first won all four, and all four toss winners had chosen to field.
| League | Games | 1st-inns avg | Bat 1st won | Chase won |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPL | 27 | 178.5 | 14 | 13 |
| WPL | 15 | 170.7 | 8 | 7 |
Across every IPL and WPL match here the split between batting first and chasing is close to even, so neither choice at the toss has a clear edge. For comparison with the other Mumbai-area grounds, see our DY Patil Stadium records page and the IPL pitch report by ground.
