Brazil sealed top spot in Group C and a place in the World Cup round of 32 with a comfortable 3-0 win over Scotland in Miami on Wednesday. Vinícius Júnior scored twice and Matheus Cunha added a third, leaving Steve Clarke’s Scotland clinging to the slim hope of going through as one of the best third-placed teams.
It was a night that needed to go almost perfectly for Scotland, and instead it went the way most had predicted. The five-time champions led early, doubled their advantage before half-time and saw the game out without ever being seriously stretched.
Vinícius strikes early and again
Brazil were in front inside seven minutes, Vinícius Júnior pouncing on a Scottish mistake to settle any early nerves and immediately shifting the burden onto a side that had to win to control its own fate. The goal set the tone. Scotland had spells of the ball but carried little threat in the final third, and Brazil looked comfortable letting them have possession in areas that did no damage.
The second goal, in first-half stoppage time, all but ended the contest. Vinícius struck again on the stroke of the interval to make it 2-0, the worst possible moment for Scotland to concede and a lead that left Clarke’s players needing three goals after the break just to stay alive.
Cunha makes it three
Matheus Cunha removed the last doubt in the 60th minute, finishing off Brazil’s third to put the result beyond question. With qualification long since secure, Brazil managed the closing half-hour and kept a clean sheet that proved decisive at the top of the table.
Those three goals lifted Brazil above Morocco on goal difference. Both finished on seven points, but Brazil’s superior margin sent them through as group winners, with Morocco joining them in the knockouts as runners-up.
Scotland left to wait and hope
Scotland end the group stage third on three points, and their tournament is not over yet, though only just. In the expanded 48-team format the eight best third-placed sides progress to the round of 32, and Scotland now have to wait on results elsewhere to learn whether their three points are enough. On the evidence of this group, it looks unlikely.
For Brazil, the bigger picture is encouraging. They have topped a tricky group, kept a clean sheet in the game that decided first place, and carried a settled look into the knockout rounds. Vinícius, in particular, chose a good night to remind everyone what he brings on the biggest stage.
