Newcastle sign Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure to fill the Gordon void

Newcastle United have made their first outfield move of the summer, signing Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim in a deal worth a reported £42m. The 20-year-old arrives on the back of a strong World Cup with the Elephants and steps straight into the hole left by Anthony Gordon, whose exit stripped Eddie Howe of his most dangerous wide runner.

A direct replacement for Gordon

This is a signing forced by necessity as much as ambition. Gordon and Sandro Tonali both left St James’ Park this summer in sales that brought in a combined £170m, and while that money gives Howe room to rebuild, it also leaves obvious gaps in a squad that had grown used to Gordon carrying the ball forward from the left. Toure is cut from a similar cloth. He is left-sided, direct, and happiest running at full-backs rather than drifting inside, which is exactly the profile Newcastle lost.

He is only the second first-team arrival of the window, following goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, and Howe has made clear there is more business to come. Getting an attacking replacement through the door early matters more than the order it happens in, though, and Newcastle have prioritised the position that hurt them most.

What Toure brings from the Bundesliga

Toure spent last season establishing himself as a regular for Hoffenheim, helping the club to a fifth-place finish and Europa League qualification, and the profile behind the move is a player who creates as much as he finishes. He is quick, comfortable beating a man in tight areas, and has shown he can pick a pass once he gets into the final third rather than simply forcing shots.

At 20 he is unmistakably a project rather than a finished article, which fits how Newcastle have tried to build under Howe: buy young, buy hungry, and give the player a defined role. Toure’s ceiling is the reason the fee climbed towards £42m, and there is risk in leaning on someone so raw to shoulder Gordon’s old workload straight away. The Premier League is a harsher test than the Bundesliga for a winger who likes to take risks in possession.

World Cup form as a springboard

The timing helps. Toure arrives having played at a World Cup, starting Ivory Coast’s opening game against Ecuador and coming off the bench in two further outings. Tournament football against senior international defences is a useful marker for a young attacker about to face Premier League full-backs every week, and it clearly did his stock no harm.

For Toure the appeal is obvious. “It was my dream since I was young to play in the Premier League for a big team like Newcastle,” he said after signing. Turning that into goals and assists, and doing it quickly enough to soften the loss of Gordon, is the real job that starts now.
