Newcastle have moved to settle one of the summer’s longer-running transfer sagas. The club have agreed a deal with Hoffenheim for Bazoumana Touré, the Ivory Coast winger Liverpool had tracked for months, in a package worth around £43m. Touré is expected to fly to Tyneside for a medical in the next couple of days and, all being well, sign a long-term contract.
Newcastle win a long chase
Touré has been on plenty of radars, and for a while it looked as though Liverpool were front of the queue. Newcastle stayed patient, kept talking to Hoffenheim, and have ended up with the player. At 20, he fits the profile Eddie Howe has leaned into: young, quick, and with resale value baked in rather than a short-term fix.
The fee lands at roughly £43m, with the total package touching €50m once add-ons are included. That is a substantial outlay for a player who has only had one full season in a major league, though it reflects both his age and how quickly his stock has risen.
From Hammarby to the Bundesliga
Touré’s rise has been fast. He was still a teenager at Hammarby in Sweden when Hoffenheim paid around £14m to sign him in early 2025, and it did not take long for him to justify it. He scored five goals and set up nine more in the Bundesliga last season as Hoffenheim finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League.
A left winger who likes to run at defenders and drift inside, he offers Newcastle something a little different in wide areas. Howe has often had to make do with a thin set of attacking options, so adding a direct forward who can beat a full-back on his own is exactly the sort of signing the squad has been short of.
A window that keeps moving
The deal makes Touré Newcastle’s second signing of the window, following the earlier arrival of Ewen Jaouen. The medical is the last hurdle, and once it is cleared Newcastle will have landed a target several bigger names were circling.
