Netherlands and Morocco collide in Monterrey for a place in the last 16

Koeman’s Netherlands topped their group; Morocco arrive with 2022 semi-final pedigree and the tournament’s hottest striker. Something has to give in Monterrey.

Netherlands and Morocco collide in Monterrey for a place in the last 16

One of the knockout round’s tastiest ties comes early on Tuesday morning for Indian fans, when the Netherlands meet Morocco in Monterrey with a place in the World Cup’s last 16 on the line. The game kicks off at 6:30am IST, the back end of a Monday night in Mexico, and on paper there is very little between them.

Dutch arrive with the better group record

The Netherlands came through Group F without losing a game, drawing with Japan before seeing off Sweden and Tunisia to finish top. That run papered over an awkward build-up, with Jurrien Timber lost to a groin injury on the eve of the tournament, but Ronald Koeman’s side have found a rhythm in attack.

Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey have shared the goals, and Denzel Dumfries gives the Dutch a constant outlet down the right. Brobbey was passed fit this week, while Micky van de Ven is in line to start at left-back. The Netherlands have the more settled look of the two teams, and on their day they carry enough firepower to beat anyone left in the draw.

Morocco are nobody’s idea of an easy draw

Then again, neither are Morocco. They finished second in Group C behind Brazil, holding the five-time champions to a draw in their opener, and they arrive as the side that stunned the world by reaching the semi-finals in 2022. That memory still shapes how opponents approach them.

Achraf Hakimi captains a squad built on European pedigree, with Brahim Diaz pulling the strings in the final third after his standout run as the top scorer at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The form pick, though, has been Ismael Saibari, who has scored in each of Morocco’s three group games and looks the man most likely to settle a tight knockout tie. Tellingly, Morocco have done all this without Youssef En-Nesyri, the 2022 hero left out of the squad entirely.

A tie with a shared bloodline

There is a familiar subplot running underneath this one. A long line of Dutch-born talent has chosen to represent Morocco over the years, and Noussair Mazraoui, born and raised in the Netherlands, is the most obvious thread between the two camps. Plenty of players on both benches grew up in the same youth setups, which lends the fixture an edge that goes beyond the bracket.

It is hard to split them. The Netherlands have the cleaner passage and the home-grown spine, Morocco the bigger-game scar tissue and the hotter striker. If Saibari keeps his run going, the Dutch could be in for a long morning. If Gakpo and Dumfries click early, Koeman’s side will fancy this. Either way, whoever loses will feel they had the players to go further.
