Mbappe scores twice as France brush aside Sweden to reach the last 16

France did not need to get out of second gear. Kylian Mbappe scored either side of half-time and Bradley Barcola added a third as the 2026 favourites brushed Sweden aside 3-0 to reach the round of 16. It was the kind of controlled, ruthless performance that reminds everyone why France are among the teams nobody wants to meet at this World Cup.

Mbappe breaks the deadlock

For all their possession, France had to wait until the stroke of half-time to make the breakthrough. Sweden had defended deep and in numbers, frustrating the favourites for 45 minutes, before Mbappe finally found the opening just as the interval approached. The goal settled French nerves and shifted the weight of the contest for good.

Any hope Sweden carried into the break lasted barely eight minutes. Michael Olise picked out Barcola, who finished smartly to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. With a two-goal cushion and Sweden forced to chase the game, France looked exactly like a side that had done this many times before.

A second for Mbappe, and a record

Mbappe wrapped it up in the 74th minute, cutting in from the left and finishing with his right foot for his second of the night. The brace carried him to 18 goals at World Cups, taking him clear of Miroslav Klose and into sole second place on the all-time list, one short of Lionel Messi’s record of 19. Both strikes came in the knockout phase, where Mbappe now has more goals than anyone in the tournament’s history.

Sweden did have a moment late on. Viktor Gyokeres, so prolific at club level, worked himself a chance to pull one back, but Mike Maignan was equal to it and preserved the clean sheet. It summed up Sweden’s night: brief flickers, nothing more, against a France side that controlled the tempo from first whistle to last.

Paraguay await in the last 16

The reward is a meeting with Paraguay, who knocked Germany out on penalties to reach this stage. On paper it looks comfortable for France, but knockout football rarely respects the form guide, and Paraguay arrive with nothing to lose and plenty of belief after eliminating one of the tournament favourites.

For now, France can be satisfied. They have reached the last 16 without overexerting themselves, kept a clean sheet, and watched their captain add to a goal tally that already puts him in rare company. Didier Deschamps will know tougher tests are coming, but on this evidence, his side are quietly building towards them.
