Manchester United trigger Tielemans’ release clause to add midfield experience

Manchester United have moved decisively for Youri Tielemans, triggering the release clause in the Belgium midfielder’s Aston Villa contract and reaching a full agreement to sign him. A medical is expected within the next day or so, which would make the 29-year-old the second midfielder through the door at Old Trafford this summer.

The clause was set at around 35 million pounds, a figure most in the game consider well below what Tielemans is worth after three strong seasons in the Premier League. United’s recruitment operation, run under the INEOS structure, spotted the provision and moved quickly once it was clear the price would not climb through a drawn-out negotiation.

A pivot that turned into a bargain

Tielemans was not the first name on United’s list for the position. The club had spent weeks pursuing Atalanta’s Ederson, only for that deal to collapse late in the process. Rather than restart a long search, United switched to Tielemans and used the clause to wrap things up fast. It follows the 50 million pound agreement already reached for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, handing Michael Carrick two new central midfielders as he rebuilds the middle of the pitch.

The need was hard to miss. Casemiro left at the end of his contract, and Manuel Ugarte has struggled to convince before picking up an injury. United went into the window short on senior, dependable midfield options, and Tielemans answers that in the most direct way available.

What Tielemans brings

He arrives as a Europa League winner. Tielemans was on the scoresheet in Villa’s 3-0 final win over Freiburg in Istanbul in May, the high point of a season in which he was one of the club’s most trusted players. He had joined Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023 and leaves a far more rounded midfielder than the one who walked in.

His summer only strengthened the case. Tielemans was among Belgium’s standout performers at the World Cup, driving them to the quarter-finals before they went out to Spain. His passing range and set-piece delivery give United something they have lacked. More than that, he brings the kind of experience the club’s younger midfielders can lean on through what looks like a demanding season on several fronts.

None of it is official until the medical is signed off, but the clubs and the player are aligned. Barring a late snag, Tielemans will be a United player before pre-season work gets going in earnest.

Keep up with every move in the summer window
