Aston Villa make World Cup breakout Manzambi their record signing

Aston Villa have made Johan Manzambi their record signing, agreeing a fee reported at £59.5m to bring the Switzerland midfielder to Birmingham from Freiburg. The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a deal running to 2030, and Villa saw off Newcastle to get it done after Manzambi spent the summer turning heads at the World Cup.

A World Cup that changed his price tag

A few months ago Manzambi was a promising Bundesliga name. He leaves the World Cup as one of the tournament’s genuine finds. Three goals and two assists in Switzerland’s four matches helped drag them to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, a run that ended against Argentina in a last-eight tie he watched from the sidelines with a minor injury.

That kind of month tends to move the market, and it did. Villa were not the only club paying attention, but they moved hardest and fastest, and a player who might have cost half as much in the spring commanded a club-record fee almost overnight.

Emery gets his midfielder

There is a neat twist to the deal. Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final back in May, the club’s first European trophy in 44 years, and now they have signed the young player who lit up Freiburg’s run to that showpiece. Manzambi was named the competition’s best young player last season and chipped in with goals and assists from midfield, the sort of all-round output Unai Emery has been chasing to add legs and control to his engine room.

He is a central midfielder by trade, right-footed and comfortable dropping deep or breaking into the box, and at 20 he arrives with room to grow rather than as the finished article. For a Villa side that finished fourth last season and wants to push higher, that profile makes sense. Whether £59.5m on a 20-year-old is smart business or a World Cup premium will only be settled over a few seasons, but Emery has rarely been wrong about a midfielder.
