Dybala re-signs with Roma until 2027 and takes a pay cut to stay
Paulo Dybala has signed a new Roma contract until 2027, accepting a sharp wage cut to stay after a fortnight as a free agent.

Paulo Dybala is staying at Roma. The club confirmed on 13 July that the Argentina forward has signed a new contract running until 30 June 2027, ending a fortnight in which he had technically been a free agent after his previous deal expired at the end of June.
The terms tell the story of where Dybala is in his career. This is a one-year deal with no option to extend, and he has accepted a sharp pay cut to sign it. Reports put his new base salary at a little under €3m a season before bonuses, down from a net wage of around €8m that made him Roma’s highest earner last season. At 32, and with the market for a player of his fitness record cooler than it once was, he chose the club he wanted rather than the biggest cheque.
A free agent who never really left
Dybala’s contract had lapsed on 30 June, which left him free to talk to any club through the first two weeks of July. In practice there was little drama. Talks between Roma and his representatives dragged on over the wage structure rather than the destination, and the player made his preference clear throughout. “It is what we all wanted,” he said after signing, a line that fit a saga which always looked more like a negotiation over money than a genuine goodbye.
He arrived in the capital in 2022 on a free transfer from Juventus, and quickly became the player Roma built their attack around. When fit, he has been their most reliable source of goals and creativity, the forward opponents plan for first. The caveat is the one that has followed him for years. Muscle injuries have cost him stretches of most seasons at Roma, and the club’s willingness to keep him only on a reduced one-year deal reflects that as much as it does his age.
What it means for Roma
For Roma, keeping Dybala is a low-risk bet on a high-ceiling player. The cut-price wage limits the downside if his body lets him down again, and there is no long contract to unwind if it does. If he stays fit, they have held on to a World Cup winner and one of Serie A’s most watchable attackers for another season. Dybala, who scored in the penalty shootout when Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, has never lacked for admirers, and Roma have now made sure they keep him a little longer.
